Mangaluru: Ambulance movement blocked by car - Man detained, fined

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP/MS)

Mangaluru, Jul 20: The driver of a Maruti Ertiga car bearing registration No. KA19 MJ8924 was detained, his car was seized, and a fine was imposed. He had blocked the path of an ambulance on NH 66 stretch of Thokkottu to Pumpwell, by which a patient who was facing an emergency was being taken from Kanachur hospital to another hospital in the city. The incident had happened on the evening of Monday July 19 and the video clip of the same had gone viral on social media.

The accused has been identified as Charan (31). The viral video clearly showed the shabby and irresponsible way in which he was driving and blocking the ambulance instead of allowing it the right of way as per rules.

Station officer of Mangaluru traffic south police station registered a suo moto case under 279 IPC and 194 (E), based on the video clippings, and confiscated the vehicle and took accused Charan, who works in animation industry, into custody. Police have advised that if any emergency vehicle is obstructed while it is blaring siren and asking for way, the offender will be fined Rs 1,000 or jailed for six months or both. Accordingly, for over speed and negligent driving also, a fine of Rs 1,000 and six month of imprisonment will be slapped on the offender.

This happens to be one of the many such incidents which usually occur, in which the people fail to behave responsibly and show humanitarian concern for the patient in the ambulance. Moreover, the drivers are legally bound to provide for free passage to ambulances. The general public need to behave more responsibly and also ensure that drivers who behave inhumanly mend their ways.

Maybe it is a genuine case of emergency, not just transporting a patient from one hospital to another for an X-ray or CT scan or for something else, but not at all an emergency situation. I have seen in Saudi Arabia (in the 90s) non-emergency cases were transported in an ambulance from one hospital to another for routine surgery the next day The drivers mainly Indians Pakistanis even other nationalities also, drive by the shrill sirens warning and flashing lights. Sitting inside an Ambulance it was fun to watch how other vehicles were giving the way to the Ambulance, other vehicles were moving in all directions like ants even causing accidents. The drivers as well as passengers inside the Ambulance were enjoying the thrill.

R,Kumar,Mangalore, suppose when it is so here ,their licence will be withdrawn or fine them ,and not allowed to be a driver in such dept.Irresponsible people. One has to give way to emergency ambulences. But people who drive shouldnt misuse the position. In India there is hardly any place on roads.Vehicles move without rules.Lives of people hangs on such delays .One should think if I was in it ,how I would feel.

I have utmost respect towards Police and men in uniform. But, one day a politician in his Toyota luxury car,who was accompanied with a police convoy came in Charmadi Ghats blocked other vehicles. Lost my patience, after being part of the convoy for a long time, I was forced to overtake them. Don't they book the politician for blocking other people's car? In fact, I have seen that politician's car going solo after Ujire ...

As per the new Motor Vehicles Act the fine for blocking emergency vehicles is Rs.10,000 and not Rs 1,000 as mentioned in the article.

Hold the RTA too responsible for this. Giving out DL like selling fish. No road manners nor priority give way explained to license aspirants.

Pedestrians who walk on the zebra crossings are not spared by motorists. Motorists do not know the purpose of zebra crossings. Smart city projects the Hampankatta junction (signal) which opened recently after some works there is no zebra crossings anywhere. Do we call this Smart City?
