Mangaluru, Jul 19: In an incident reported from the city, a lady achieved fulfilment at the time of her demise by donating six of her organs to other patients and thus saving their precious lives. A brain-dead woman donated her organs to the people who were in dire need.

Linda Sharon D'Souza (41) from Kinnigoli was being treated for hypertension in Father Muller Hospital, Kankanady in the city. As her brain had stopped responding, her brothers decided to donate her organs. The procedure was performed in this respect on the evening of Sunday July 18.

Linda's heart and lungs were given to MGM Hospital Chennai, liver to a hospital in Bengaluru, one of the two kidneys to KMC Hospital Manipal and the other to A J Hospital Mangaluru. Part of her skin was donated in order to perform graft on patients admitted in K S Hegde Hospital Deralakatte.

Her heart, liver and lungs were taken to Mangaluru airport by an ambulance on Sunday evening. From there, the organs were transported to Chennai and Bengaluru. Mangaluru police arranged for green corridor for the ambulance from the hospital to the airport.

Linda was employed in a bank at Bengaluru. Four years back, she left her job and started to reside with her mother because of her hypertension problem. As her health complications aggravated, she had been admitted into Fr Muller Hospital on July 11.

In addition to Dr Venkatesh M, who was being consulted for her health problems for the last four years, Dr Raghavendra, Dr Geovar Lobo and Dr Manjunath J too were treating her. During the CT scan, it was found that blood had clotted in her brain and she was unconscious. She was admitted into ventilator bed in the intensive care unit. On Saturday, her brain stopped responding, said medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Uday Kumar. The fact that it is impossible for her to survive was brought to the notice of her brothers, Lancy Prakash D'Souza and Santosh D'Souza and they were asked whether they would like to donate her organs. As the brothers responded positively, 'Jeeva Sarthakathe', the state government's organization that is the only authority to decide on organ donations and transplants, was contacted, and arrangement to donate the organs were made.

Teams of experts from Benglauru and Chennai had arrived on Sunday morning. The work of seggragating the organs and dissection began at 12.30 pm and ended by 5.30 pm.

Lancy Prakash D'Souza and Santosh D'Souza said that the organ donation has enabled the organs of their sister to live on through others, and that this also has resulted in her life getting fulfilled.

Padma Venur and Lavina D’Souza from Jeeva Saarthakathe organisation, Father Muller Charitable Institution director Fr Richard Coelho, PRO Dr Kelvin Pais, kidney transplant coordinator Father Muller’s Reshma, hospital and police staffs, Father Muller Hospital medical superintendent Dr Uday Kumar K, also played a part in the entire success operation.
