Karnataka to teach professional courses in Kannada from 2022-23

Bengaluru, Jul 19 (IANS): Giving prominence to the promotion of local language, professional courses, including engineering would be taught in Kannada from next academic year (2022-23) across Karnataka, said state Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan on Sunday.

"We have initiated translation of curriculum into the regional language to teach professional courses like engineering and medicine in also Kannada from next academic year," said Narayan at a webinar, hosted by All Language Faculty Association of Karnataka University on ‘New Education Policy - Study of Indian Languages'.

Narayan, who also holds the portfolio of IT, BT, Science and Technology and Higher Education, said Kannada would be strengthened as mother tongue under the New Education Policy (NEP).

"As the NEP stresses on providing professional courses in regional languages, we are taking steps to realise its benefits," said Narayan.

Advocating that Kannada should also flourish with other languages in line with the progress being made in other spheres of learning like innovation and technology, the minister said courses and curriculum would be designed by universities and subject experts.

"The NEP does not allow outsiders to enforce other languages on the natives," he added.

State higher education council vice-chairman Timmegowda, Kannada Pustaka Pradhikara former chairman S.G. Siddaramaiah and NEP's draft committee member T.V. Kattimani participated in the webinar.

Dear Fernandes, Mangalore. I think such kind of translation is not meant here. Medium of instruction will be Kannada.

Local language promotion suits best in Germany, Japan and China like countries where there are ample job and business opportunities. As of now we don't have enough job and business opportunities to cater to our students, so it doesn't makes any sense teaching in Kannada at the cost of English which helps the candidate to secure job. It's counter productive, rob them of their scope of securing a job. Ofcourse Kannada / Hindi, be taught as a subject / language.

I think the govt is not planning to cancel English medium and force Kannada medium. There are many who serve our country lifelong. So teaching in Kannada is a good initiative.

Politicians job is to keep the common man under his clutches while he and his pultan advance forward in life. They need us under their thumb to feed their egos and bank balances. They come up with such idiotic policies while their family goes to the best schools, in India and abroad, and then come back to rule over us again.

By this our Government is trying to make people of Karnataka jobless for sure. To promote a language Professional colleges are not the ones to be selected. Teach language in elementary itself.

Elementary school stage is best for the enrichment of mother tongue. Professional courses can also be taught through it.

Students studying in Kannada medium right from the beginning will find it easier to pursue their higher studies. They will be able to get a better understanding of the subjects which can ultimately help them to excel in their careers. I have seen German, Spanish and Japanese engineers who are not fluent in English but are highly efficient in their respective fields, performing better than English speaking Americans.

if Chinese, Japanese learn in their language, why not Indian languages... however, along with Kannada medium education, English has to be taught as link language and communicating with outside world... Kannada and English are enough in KN... Hindi can be picked up while talking to paanipuri, panwallah, istri etc., no need of hindi in curriculum... instead of Hindi, Sanskrit can be introduced as subject...

You are 100% correct. Nowadays students are forgetting Kannada. They are forced to learn in English medium schools only because higher education is in english medium.

I would like to see how many of these law makers send their kids to Kannada medium and then make them stay back in India to study professional courses in the regional language. The fact of the matter is, the rules/laws are made for minions like us. But for these people and their pultan, none will apply. Just distract people in the name of language, cast, creed, and religion. The actual job of a politician.

I personally like this step. studies have shown teaching a subject in your mother tongue helps you understand the concepts much better. Also they never mentioned that English will not be taught. English is necessary for work and can be taught in every semester as a subject to focus on proficiency needed in work related situations. Unfortunately for us Mangaloreans. this will not help since our mother-tongue is Tulu, Konkani Beary etc. until they come up with curriculum in these languages. however, this is a good starting point towards this.

Why Kannada? Teach in Tulu especially in Mangalore, Udupi and Kasargod, that is our local language and mother tongue. It's very important to learn in mother language to make us understand better.

Upto ITI and midwifery okay. If it's for engineering and medicine in Kannada then our state will go backwards. Important to note all the rich and politician will send their children to foreign countries for higher studies in English.

Height of stupidity. Kannada upto 10th or 12th is okay. When we join a MNC company after Engineering, should we use these below words? Candidate from UP, TB, WB will have different wordings for these words. Modi's NEP is aimed at imposing Hindi in disguise of local language protection. I am a proud Tulu Kannadiga. I hate Hindi Imposition and I hate Kannada imposition in Technical Course. This will make our students incompetent globally.

This madness of overemphasizing Kannada is an irritating issue. If professionals do their studies in Kannada, will Karnataka employ them locally? When the Govt has no plans to provide employment, why should the students agree to study in Kannada? If local employers themselves not support them how do they expect the professionals to go out of the state, out of the country and get employment? This stupid idea should be trimmed at its bud instead of going on harping on language issue. Even if they try to implement, there will be no takers.
