Udupi, Jul 17: Three children, who had lost their father, were in a helpless situation. Noted social worker, Vishu Shetty Ambalpady, rescued them and entrusted them to the care of the child protection department. The incident occurred within the limits of Shirva police station on Friday July 16.
Two boys aged 14 and 10, along with their eight-year-old sister and mother, were living under uncivilized conditions in a hut, roof of which was leaking. Vishu Shetty, who learnt about their plight, met the family. The mother of the children confessed that it is impossible for her to look after the children and educate them by working as a coolie. She requested Shetty to do something for the children to lead a decent life.
The father of these children had died in the district hospital here on June 27 due to ill health. Vishu Shetty performed the last rites and helped the children. Even though he had urged the child protection unit to take care of the children through the media, there was no positive response from the department.
Shetty, after learning about the vulnerable situation in which the family is living, instilled courage in the mother. He took charge of the children, got them tested for coronavirus infection, and handed them over to the child protection department. The officials there have since provided shelter to the children after completing legal formalities.
Child legal surveillance officer, Prabhakar Acharya, extended support in this rescue.
