Sullia, Jul 16: The officials led by the child development project officer (CDPO), raided a spot in Dugaladka Kandadka within the limits of the town panchayat here, on the night of Wednesday July 14 and stopped a child marriage from happening there.

It is said that a 26-year-old youth belonging to a Tamil family living in Kandadka named Pratap was to marry a girl from Mysuru on Thursday July 15. Reportedly, this information reached the CDPO on Wednesday evening. CDPO Rashmi Ashok, along with the supervisor in the department and assistant child protection officer Deepika and village accountant Tippesh, went to Kandadka along with four policemen.

The relatives of the girl had already arrived from Mysuru. On being questioned, the family failed to provide any documentary proof about the girl having completed 18 years of age. The officials then educated them about the ill-effects of child marriage.

It is learnt that the relatives of the girl decided to return to Mysuru without performing the marriage. They said they would conduct the marriage after the girl attains 18 years of age.
