Udupi, Jul 14: Health minister Dr K Sudhakar on Wednesday, July 14 said that the newly constructed Udupi district hospital will be open for the service of the people in the year 2023.

Speaking to media persons over the construction of a full-fledged government district hospital in Udupi, the health minister said, "As per the wish of political representatives, district in-charge minister and MLA, the tender has been floated for the construction of the district hospital. Only a work order copy has to be issued. We will lay the foundation stone for the new district hospital this month or by August 15. The construction of the hospital will be completed by the next 15 months. The Udupi district hospital will be open for the public in the year 2023."

The health minister who visited land allotted for the construction of district hospital, speaking on the government taking the Udupi's Mother and Child Hospital to its fold, said, "Till now BR Shetty was managing the hospital. Due to the financial crisis, he has sought financial assistance from the government. We cannot let the hospital be in the existing state. The government is focusing on it. There was a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) along with the government to build a hospital in 2-acre land under the PPP model. Hence, the government will closely review this and make a final decision by next week. If the government cannot manage the hospital, then who else will manage it? The government is running so many hospitals. They are also running 18 medical colleges including Jayadeva and Kidwai hospitals."

"As BR Shetty agreed to provide free medical service after naming the hospital after his mother and father, the government has approved to hand over the hospital to him. But, now his institution is facing financial uncertainty," he said.

Medical college in Udupi

"There is a demand to construct a medical college in Udupi. The government and the chief minister is thinking of constructing the medical colleges in 10 districts where there are government medical colleges under the PPP model by MoU. The union government has prepared a model. The same will be implemented in 9-10 districts of the state and Udupi is one of them. Several private companies are coming forward in this regard. Already, the government has reserved 30 acres of the land for the purpose. There are basic facilities in the district. It is very easy to build a medical college in Udupi," Sudhakar said.

The people should strictly adhere to the guidelines of the government to contain the spread of the third wave of Covid-19. The government has successfully administered a 2.60 crore vaccination to the people. There is a target to complete three crores of additional vaccinations. Then the adverse effect of the third wave will be less. He also said that if the people arrange events that promote crowds, third-wave Covid-19 will be catastrophic.

Speaking on the scarcity of paediatricians in Udupi, Sudhakar said, "We are appointing medical experts in this regard. We have sent the doctors from PHC to here. Doctors have been appointed through direct appointment."

The people entering the state from Kerala and Goa should be compulsorily vaccinated. Only then should they be allowed. Only, after the RT-PCR negative report, travellers will be allowed inside the state, the minister directed officials
