Shivamogga, Jul 13: State minister for rural development and panchayat raj, Eshwarappa, feels that the initiative taken by the Uttar Pradesh government to enforce two children norm for the families in order to regulate the population growth, is a timely decision. He said he will soon discuss the matter with the chief minister (CM) B S Yediyurappa about the desirability of bringing such a law in Karnataka, and that a suitable decision will be taken soon.
"The population in the state is continuously growing. The central government has been trying to keep the population explosion under check, but it has not succeeded. Therefore, the Uttar Pradesh government has begun to think on ways to achieve this objective. After observing the experience there, we will also take a decision about the implementation of such a law here," he explained.
Eshwarappa said his party is not opposed to the publication of reservation criteria for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections. He said that the commission could have discussed the matter at least for courtesy sake with the state government in which case the government could have made certain suggestions. In a system of decentralisation of power, reservation should be announced duly laying stress on social justice. There are over four crore voters in villages and we wish that all of them take part in the zilla and taluk panchayat elections, he stated.
