Varkala (Thiruvananthapuram), Jul 7: Former head of Sivagiri Math Swami Prakashananda (99) passed away at the Varkala Sree Narayana Mission Hospital on Wednesday July 7. 

He was suffering from age-related health issues. According to sources, the final rites (Samadhi) will be held at around 5 pm on Wednesday.

The vedic scholar was revered by Sree Narayana Guru followers.

He was born in December 1922 in Kalatharady of Piravathur. His name in 'Purvashrama' was Kumaran. In his leadership, Sivagiri Brahma Vidyala was established. For several years, he served as president of Sivagiri Sri Narayanaguru Daramasangam Trust. In the years 1970 and 1977, he served as secretary of the Trust.

At age of age 23, he joined the Math. He completed his spiritual education as disciple of Swami Shakarananda who was then head of the Math. He took 'Deeksha' at the age of 35.
