Udupi, Jul 6: The road between Syndicate Circle Manipal and the office of the deputy commissioner has been named as Dr V S Acharya Road. It was inaugurated by state industries minister Jagadish Shettar, on Tuesday, July 6.
On the occasion of Dr Acharya's birth anniversary, the minister also garlanded the statue of Dr Acharya installed near the deputy commissioner's office.
Speaking on the occasion, Shettar termed Dr Acharya as a person with a great personality and said he feels lucky to be participating in this programme. He hailed Acharya for rising to the top from the grassroots in the party and for building the party. He said that L K Advani keeps remembering Dr Acharya, adding that with his wise decisions Acharya had taken the ministry to the highest level and used to easily solve complicated problems which were referred to the cabinet.
Udupi MLA, Raghupathi Bhat, recalled that Dr Acharya was a great personality, at the demise of whom even the Congress, in spite of being the opposition party, had organized a meeting to pay tribute to him. "A decision to name this road after Dr Acharya had been taken long back. Recently, a resolution was passed in the municipal council, and government approval was obtained. Dr Acharya always took a stand in support of development, and he had worked hard on the issue of constructing deputy commissioner's office here," he stated.
Coastal Development Authority chairman, Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde, chairman of Udupi Urban Development Authority, Raghavendra Kini, Udupi municipal president, Sumitra R Nayak, vice president, Laxmi Manjunath Kola, the standing committee chairman, Girish Anchan, national general secretary of BJP Backward Classes Morcha, Yashpal Suvarna, BJP district president, Kuilady Suresh Nayak, children of Dr Acharya, Kiran Acharya and Raviraj Acharya, and others were present.
