Mumbai: Bone death reported in three post-Covid patients in city

Mumbai, Jul 6: In a shocking development, three cases of post-Covid avascular necrosis (AVN) are reported in the city. This is the second condition after black fungus which the Covid patients are at a risk of facing. According to medical experts, more cases of AVN are likely to occur in the coming months.

The three cases of confirmed AVN are of patients who are under 40 and were treated at Hinduja Hospital at Mahim. They got the disease two months after they were treated for Covid. In a statement given by Dr Sanjay Agarwala, medical director of Hinduja Hospital, the patients, who were doctors themselves could recognize the pain in the femur bone and rushed to the hospital.

The main cause of both black fungus and AVN is said to be the use of steroids in treating Covid patients. Large-scale use of life-saving corticosteroids will be responsible for AVN and black fungus said the medical journal BMJ case studies, published on Saturday by Dr Agarwala.

According to top officials in the government hospital at Coimbatore, 30 people have lost vision of the eye out of the 264 patients affected mucormycosis (black fungus). In a statement, Dr N Nirmala, dean of the hospital said that endoscopy is performed on all those who were admitted for mucormycosis and 110 have undergone visualisation surgery also. However, 30 patients who had severe infection lost sight in one eye. She also said that the patients who reported for treatment at an early stage are completely cured of the disease.

In a recent statement, Sadananda Gowda, the union minister said that the central government has allocated an additional 2,12,540 vials of Amphotericin-B to states, union territories and central institutions for use to treat black fungus.
