Mangaluru, Jul 3: An underground sewage treatment plant (STP) has been operating at the Pachanady Moodushedde region under the jurisdiction of Mangaluru Municipal Corporation. The aforementioned treatment plant has been alleged of releasing untreated polluted water that flows through the Phalguni river bed into the Maravoor dam. This has resulted in drinking water issues for the residents in the said region.
Taking serious cognizance of reports and visuals, and complaints lodged by various organisations, MCC commissioner Akshy Sridhar conducted an inspection of STP and collected water samples on Saturday, July 3.
Following the inspection, superintendent engineers have been directed to issue a show cause notice to STP operator Envirotech Company Ltd within 24 hours as to why a criminal case must not be lodged against them under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act.
To ensure that such incidents do not repeat, CCTV cameras will be installed and regular inspection will be conducted henceforth, stated a press release from the MCC.
In order to find a permanent solution for the issue, a technical report has been received from experts at NITK, Suratkal. Based on this report, a request has been sent to the government for an estimated amount of Rs 24.7 lac.
