Bengaluru, Jun 29: Chief minister B S Yediyurappa has directed that water should be released to Vedavathi valley by the end of July under the first phase of the Yettinahole project for which the state government has spent Rs 9,003.86 crore so far.
The Yettinahole project provides drinking water to over 68 lac people of 6,557 villages of 29 taluks in the 7 districts.
The chief minister, who reviewed the progress of the Yettinahole and Upper Bhadra Projects on Tuesday, asked the officials to complete the works in both projects in a time-bound manner.
The state government’s proposal for declaring the Upper Bhadra project as a national project to ensure greater funding from the union government was awaiting the union cabinet’s approval, the chief minister said pointing out that he has already discussed the issue with the union ministers concerned by phone and if necessary will personally meet to press for early approval.
The Upper Bhadra project has completed works to the tune of Rs 2,362.62 crore during the last two years, Yediyurappa said pointing out that the project when completed was expected to benefit water-starved regions of Tumakuru, Chitradurga and Davangere districts.
The chief minister warned the officials that the state government would take stringent action if there were any lapses in the execution of the project.
Chief minister’s additional chief secretary Dr R V Ramana Reddy, finance department’s additional chief s ecretary I S N Prasad, water resources department additional chief secretary Rakesh Singh and other senior officials participated in the review meeting.
Kisan Rail with mangoes flagged off
The chief minister, earlier, flagged off a special Kisan Rail service carrying a consignment of 250 tonnes of mangoes from Chintamani taluk in Kolar district to Delhi.
Horticulture minister, Nagesh, revenue minister, R Ashok, home and law minister, Basavaraj Bommai, cooperation minister, S T Somashekar, Bengaluru Development Authority chairman, S R Vishwanath and other senior officials were present.
