Mangaluru: No work - Migrant workers facing multifarious problems

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 21: Because of the effects of the coronavirus second wave, workers are finding it difficult to get some work. Many migrant workers find it hard to get work for even two days a week. They face hardships to pay house rent and maintain their families. Many workers say that unlike in the past, no one comes requesting them to do work. A number of such workers can be seen roaming around with a bag in hand, seeking some work to feed their families.

Urwa Store, Kavoor, Kulur Baikampady, Kulai, Thokkottu are the places where the demand for migrant workers is high and where the workers come together. The workers normally arrive at the specified spots and wait till 9 am to be picked for some work. If someone offers them work, they accompany them. Otherwise, they return to their huts. On the next day they go and wait again. People who need workers reach these places seeking workers and take away workers as per their requirement.

As per labour rules, workers coming from other districts or states have to register themselves in the department. But migrant workers in the district never work for the same company. As their names are not registered, they are deprived of government facilities.

Most of these workers are unskilled but they are ready to do any work offered to them. They are ready to do things like cleaning, weeding, assistance in masonry, digging of earth etc. They work for Rs 400 to 450 a day unlike other coolies who demand Rs 500 to 600. Women workers who have come from north Karnataka, are even prepared to work for Rs 250 to 300 a day.

Many workers say that they have not been getting work for the last two month, and they cannot return as there are no buses. They rue the fact that they have not got any facility from the government. Most of them blame coronavirus which they say has robbed them of their livelihood and taking care of the families has become a big burden for them.

appi, mumbai - What an eye opener reply ! Truly, if a poor man drinks he is wasting hard earned money and when a white collar earner spends thousands on expensive brands then it is called relaxation and a social drink to maintain good friend circle in the society. why can't same money be offered to the poor ? Humans are starving and facing un known difficulties to have hand to mouth. No proper education then the educated watch them with irrational way naming Rohinya, Bangladeshi, Bihari. Some one rightly corrected that notion as they are humans first. We have to wake up . if do not want to wish any good on such people, please do not take the liberty to abuse them.

@ MARIO FERNANDES, Lalbagh, here the question is due to Covid 19 pandemic the economy is going through bad or sluggish phase. No cash to conduct construction or real estate and development projects in the market. and migrant workers are the most effected. They depend on market demand and when the situation is so bad they are left job opportunities and no income as such. So sad. As to the drinking alcohol, even our locals are not bad after all.

One Nation ,One Ration has the objective of providing free food for all irrespective of his location of work ..this will immensely help migrant workers in the unorganized sector. 80% of Indian labor is unorganized ..They are often subject to exploitation by touts and agents. But its difficult to find quality labor these days..

Nobody has been robbed. The basic thing is once you start working, learn to start saving. Most of these people earn 600 but blow it up completely on liquor. Learn the basics first. Nobody reaches the top unless they struggle to climb the ladder. Even top industrialists are facing the issue of not getting revenue. The pandemic is not God created but man-made and the only way to get rid of it is for every person to follow the rules set and finally we can conquer it. God bless everyone.

Dear Mario, Do you know prices have shot up high? 600 a day is nothing even 1000 a day you cant save anything. Just because they are poor doesn't mean they should pay less and eat substandard food. Easy for you to talk sitting in your comfort couch Easy to say no one climbs up to top and all we are 135 crore have you seen 135 crore ambani's? Its govt duty to ensure all class of society provided with standard food, education health and shelter as affordable for them Not everyone spends money on liquor.. When you enjoy your scotch and dukramas why not a hard working labour shall be deprived from having little liquor for his ease of day.. Don't put these cliché statements

The promised 15 lakh rupees in every citizen's account 7 years ago would have made the difference in these people's lives. By the way where is the 20lakh crores aid package announced by the Rajmata last year. Looks like the bullet train carrying the package lost its tracks on the way .....!!!!

Jeevan kudla, corruption is more now than ever before, in 70 years there were hardly any people who have cheated the banks and ran away with the money, but now there are so many that's difficult to count, swiss bank deposits of money has gone up 3 times, whose money is it and from where is it come, only change of government will reveal the truth, Remember nothing is permanent in this world., But when we realize it, it will be too late.
