Udupi, Sep 1: Due to the force of the hurricane that blew in Avarse region near Brahmavar at around 11 am on Tuesday August 31, a number of roof files of the government higher primary school there were blown away. The school suffered partial damage, while six students were injured. They were admitted into a private hospital in Brahmavar.
Several other students escaped with minor nicks and cuts. As soon as the tiles started falling one by one, the teachers immediately brought the students out of the building onto the play ground. However, suddenly a number of tiles slipped and fell. Considering the fact that tiles from many parts of the school roof fell to the ground, because of timely action of the teachers, only a few were injured.
MP, D V Sadanand Gowda, MLA, Halady Srinivas Shetty, MLC, Kota Srinivas Poojary, Brahmavar block education officer, Nagesh Shanbhogue, Udupi tahsildar, V Prasanna, Brahmavar special tahsildar, Ravikumar, and various other dignitaries visited the injured students.
A tree got uprooted over an anganwadi centre located adjacent to the said school. However, no one was injured, although several tiny tots were inside the centre at the time. The loss to the two buildings in the above incident has been put at Rs 1.5 lac.
