Mangaluru, Jun 19: Many roads are dug throughout the city in order to make way for Smart City project related works during the lockdown period. The work is still in progress. If the lockdown is withdrawn there is a huge possibility that the city will face traffic chaos.
The main roads that will get affected are M G Road, Bunts Hostel, RTO office and GHS road. There will be heavy vehicle congestion on these roads as they are the important roads that connect to various other junctions. During lockdown, only one way traffic is allowed in the city.
Most of the roads in the city do not have the drainage system for the rain water to flow. It is a common scene near Ambedkar Circle, K S Rao Road and Rao & Rao Circle to get clogged with water with little rain. In front of the Bejai KSRTC bus stand, rain water creates a pond. Pedestrians face inconvenience to walk at this place. These issues have been prevailing for many years and the public is waiting for the city corporation to do something about them.
Most of the roads where the Smart City work is going on are having piles of mud, sand and asphalt on the side of the road which blocks nearly half of the road. In Car Street, rain water has entered many shops and houses during the recent rains.
Mayor Premanand Shetty, however, says, “Most of the Smart City related works that are going on in the city are on the verge of getting completed. Care will be taken to ensure smooth flow of traffic. This time around water clogging will be less as drainage and footpaths are constructed in most of the main roads.”
