Mangaluru, Jun 18: Mangalore Electricity Supply Co Ltd (Mescom) has suffered a loss of Rs 13.67 crore due to strong wind and rain between April and June this year.
A total of 7,075 electric poles were damaged within the limits of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru district limits. The loss in this case has been calculated at Rs 5.86 crore. As many as 680 transformers were damaged, which caused loss of Rs 6.56 crore. Power cables to a length of 219.8 km was damaged, which resulted in loss of Rs 1.24 crore.
Mescom stated that it has been repairing and replacing damaged power lines on a war footing to ensure that power supply is restored at the earliest. It also said that it has enough stock of poles, transformers, power lines and other equipment, and there is no shortage.
Mescom has sanctioned 19 additional vehicles to Dakshina Kannada district, seven to Udupi, ten to Shivamogga district and ten vehicles to Chikkamagaluru district to handle the works.
All the four districts within Mescom jurisdiction have hills, hillocks, forests, rivers and other hard to reach places. In cases like where vehicles find it difficult to reach the spot, repair and replacement of power lines gets naturally delayed. Mescom has requested its consumers to cooperate with the company in such cases.
Mescom is in readiness to handle unexpected damages which might occur during the rainy season. A special force with 585 staff has been additionally sanctioned for a period of three months. As many as 176 staff have been allotted to Dakshina Kannada, 117 to Udupi, 142 to Shivamogga district and 150 to Chikkamagaluru.
