Mangaluru: Damage to poles, transformers - Mescom suffers Rs 13.67 crore loss

Mangaluru, Jun 18: Mangalore Electricity Supply Co Ltd (Mescom) has suffered a loss of Rs 13.67 crore due to strong wind and rain between April and June this year.

A total of 7,075 electric poles were damaged within the limits of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru district limits. The loss in this case has been calculated at Rs 5.86 crore. As many as 680 transformers were damaged, which caused loss of Rs 6.56 crore. Power cables to a length of 219.8 km was damaged, which resulted in loss of Rs 1.24 crore.

Mescom stated that it has been repairing and replacing damaged power lines on a war footing to ensure that power supply is restored at the earliest. It also said that it has enough stock of poles, transformers, power lines and other equipment, and there is no shortage.

Mescom has sanctioned 19 additional vehicles to Dakshina Kannada district, seven to Udupi, ten to Shivamogga district and ten vehicles to Chikkamagaluru district to handle the works.

All the four districts within Mescom jurisdiction have hills, hillocks, forests, rivers and other hard to reach places. In cases like where vehicles find it difficult to reach the spot, repair and replacement of power lines gets naturally delayed. Mescom has requested its consumers to cooperate with the company in such cases.

Mescom is in readiness to handle unexpected damages which might occur during the rainy season. A special force with 585 staff has been additionally sanctioned for a period of three months. As many as 176 staff have been allotted to Dakshina Kannada, 117 to Udupi, 142 to Shivamogga district and 150 to Chikkamagaluru.

    This loss is due to lack of preventative maintainence measures. Timely actions would have saved us. Prevention is better than cure. MESCOM technical department should initiate more site inspections, snagging to mitigate all risks. Risk assessment is absolutely necessary. Any trees pose danger of uprooting adjuscant to electrical high tension cables should be taken immidiate care of. This loss of 13 crore is a pain.

    Loss?what loss?It is the money of consumers .Consumer has to wait ,whether one want or not.It is the only Monopol electricity in mangalore.So they do what they want.Without some hand warming they are not doing anything.Look at the transformers ,how they are fixed.They know in mangalore strong wind and monsoon rain is causing lot of problems.So should fix transformers so that nothing can make them to move.deep digging and placing fix it with concrete slab.India is the only country where these electric disturbance ,wires are on road,or in field which causes so many deaths ,that everything goes on our Mescom accounts.Now they talk of loss.well let them work professionally and with heart.

    What's the hell you are talking of MESCOM suffers loss due to transformer and poles damage. Please check individual bills. Every month MESCOM charges 70 units for transformer and other repairs 80 units at the rate of Rs.0.67 and Rs.2.57 respectively. Where all this money goes?

    The photograph shows obvious design fault. A transformer pole structure has to be designed for eccentric load from transformer, drag from cables as well as for wind load. The footing should have been made out of RCC and not merely a small lump of concrete around the foot of the pole, that too without sufficient depth in foundation. Alternatively the base should have a wide spread concrete slab to counter the above mentioned load. Unfortunately, MESCOM does not bother about these factors. Some dumb engineer floates tenders and another dumb fellow supervises the installation by contractor. Let them conduct a technical evaluation taking into consideration the lose soil around the poles and then confirm whether the structure foundation was designed properly. Just giving an exaggerated figure of loss does not solve the problem. In fact the concerned engineers should be made to bear the loss cumulatively.

    First and foremost people staying in Mangalore will have to take this shit for ages together, because MESCOM is entirely monopoly. There NOT being an alternate power supply company in Karnataka it will be this way only. In metropolis like Bombay where there are private companies supplying uninterrupted power supply, competition is pretty healthy and gives the MSEB (Maharashtra State Electricity Board) a run for its money.😒 MESCOM is in a bullshitting mood. In the pandemic it had at its disposal plenty of time to upgrade its infrastructure by rendering quality and service to its potential customers, it is disgusting to note that they didn't use the opportunity well. Every Tuesday they would carry out preventive maintenance all across their networks but the disruption shows the maintenance were pathetic and abysmal. There have been numerous complaints from aggrieved customers that during pre-monsoon period too there has been constant power fluctuations resulting in loss and damages to several electronic household gadgets. The only way to teach MESCOM a lesson is if customers know how to approach the Consumers Grievance Forum and file complaints towards losses incurred o their household gadgets with proof due to extremely poor service and accrue the losses from MESCOM. Once such a revolution starts MESCOM will eventually be constrained to drastically improve its network and reduce its losses considerably from all quarters.

    Yesterday there was a power cut from 10am to 5pm in m'lore city limits. MESCOM is totally a corrupt department. Since so many years why there is no one time solution for all these damages??? Why there is no underground cabling system in the smart city. Every now and then they fix the same transformers and same wires. No government wants to have an one time solution. They need to make money, that's it.

Since they fall under the jurisdiction of essential services, they're bound to fulfil their obligation. If they aren't in a position to do so, let them pack their bags and make way for a new player to take over the reigns.

    Mescom should make public ,its production cost ,transmission cost ,and maintenance cost including salary of staff,etc .This will bring transparency and will convince its consumers as to why they charge so high
