Udupi, Jun 18: During the difficult phase of Covid infection, the zilla panchayat has extended support to coolies by providing employment to a large extent under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). 3,046 works were executed and coolie of Rs 9.55 crore was disbursed. Rs 2.03 crore was spent towards materials. As many as 18,503 persons belonging to 10,632 families got benefit out of this scheme.
On account of the lockdown, many people lost their jobs. Several are working from home. At this time, NREGA has provided succour and support to the rural youth. Under this scheme, even personal works can be performed.
Desilting was taken up in 103 ponds, sediment was cleared from 152 drains, and 982 irrigation wells, while 855 bathroom pits were dug, 326 cattle sheds, 44 areca, coconut and other horticultural crops extension activities were undertaken. During the year 2021-22, employment cards were issued afresh to 3,213 families.
For the year 2021-22, Udupi district humbled the target and achieved 107.95 percent of the target set for June this year. As much as 63.2 percent ladies took part under the scheme, which is highest in the state, said chief executive officer of Udupi zilla panchayat, Dr Naveen Bhat.
