Udupi, Jun 16: The district is receiving copious amounts of rains since four days. The meteorological department has announced orange alert.
Due the incessant rains of the past week, landslide occurred on a hill at Ottinene in the district. The mud from the landslide fell on NH 66 and obstructed traffic for some time.
During the four-lane highway work that was held recently, some part of the hill was excavated. The part which was dug got moist and slid. The landslide is continuing. During the last monsoon season also the hill by the side of road at Ottinene had collapsed. Contractor IRB company is clearing the mud that has fallen on the road.
A commuter, who passes by this road daily said, “Ottinene hill is made up of slimy mud. This hill should not have been dug in order to make highway. During monsoon landslide occurs at various parts of the hill. This issue will not be resolved. If the engineers had given proper information to government while widening the highway, this issue would not have occurred.”
