Mangaluru: Maravoor bridge develops cracks, traffic suspended

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 15: Maravoor bridge, vital lifeline of road transport of the city that connects to the international airport, has developed a crack due to heavy rain that lashed on the night of Monday June 14.

The first span of this bridge, while moving from Mangaluru city to Bajpe airport, has collapsed to about three feet depth and staying in a precarious manner. As incessant rains are lashing the coastal districts since three days, the water from the dam above was flowing only on one side.

Locals suspect that the sand mining that is going on below the bridge in the Gurpur river might have led to the crack.

This is the second bridge in the district to collapse within a span of three years. On June 26, 2018 the Mularpatna bridge in Bantwal which connects Mangaluru with Sornadu had collapsed.

It is said that the illegal sand mining that is going on below the bridge is the reason for this mishap. In 2018, Mularpatna bridge also collapsed for the same reason as relentless excavation of sand was going on near the pillars of the bridge, which made them weak and led to the collapse.

Kavoor-Bajpe police are on the spot. Traffic and pedestrian movement on the bridge is completely prohibited.

The mishap caused total disruption of traffic that leads to the airport. It is said that this mishap occurred at around 2.30 am on Tuesday June 15. Traffic is diverted to two alternative routes. Those who want to go to other side of the Marvoor bridge from Kavoor can either use Kavoor-Kulur-KBS Jokatte-Porkody-Bajpe route or Pacchanady-Vamanjoor-Gurpur-Kaikamba-Bajpe route.

Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar, who visited the spot said, “Two pillars of Maravoor bridge connecting Bajpe Airport across the Phalguni river have collapsed. As of now, the bridge is not suitable for vehicular as well as pedestrian movement. Commuters coming from Udupi to the airport should take the Udupi-Mulky- Kinnigoli-Kateel-Bajpe route, while people coming from Kasargod and Mangaluru should take Nanthoor-Vamanjoor-Gurupur-Kaikamba-Bajpe route. The concerned department will visit the spot and take measures. People should cooperate as vehicular movement is completely restricted on the bridge."

Apart from poor Construction - bridges have survived hundreds of years - if sand mining is the cause it means day light robbery - vast stretches on both sides of the bridge are visible and even if working @ night surely it has to be with sufficient illumination - CANNOT WORK IN THE DARK -- SO A ORGANISED MAFIA - Law enforcers- Transport dept - political leaders --local etc - etc - At a time when Demonetisation note ban etc public endured - it is clear all was eye wash - This whole sand mining is happening on a cash and carry basis -

People used to transport vegetables in this bridge over bullock carts to mangalore central market near state bank in the pre and post independence . This is because interms of fuel expense this was cheaper. Sad to see the condition right now of Maraoor bridge. After independence and overcoming british rule, this bridge has not been repaired and not kept in a workable condition. Sand mafia , once upon a time iron ore mafia run by Ballary barrons, were running the heavy transport vehicles continuesly. This made a pathetic condition of the bridge. Its disgusting that this bridge exists near our ADANI INTERNATIONAL airport . And is just less than one kilometer!!! Governance bodies as well as concernd authorities wake up and do something for this monumental bridge. Reminding me the song "LONDON BRIDGE IS FALLING DOWN"!

This bridge was constructed post independent. Before the construction of the bridge there used to be a bus bringing the passengers to one side of the river and a small country boat used to ferry the passengers and goods to other side and another bus waiting to take the people further to places like Bondel, Hampanakatta, Same company buses used to ply on this route..notably CPC company. And other route was via Gurpur bridge, of-course built during British era.

Looking at the pictures this bridge needs to be razed entirely. If such huge pillars have collapsed/moved it is as good as foundation was weak. It cannot withstand a gush of water during monsoons. Another 10-15- years for a new bridge perhaps. Mangalore Airport...Bridges..Roads....Unscientific..Risky.

While sand mining - illegal going on - it is a separate issue as far as the bridge problem is concerned --\ PRIMA FACIE -- if there was a good foundation as per stipulated designs surely this cannot happen-- We cannot find sand around a good foundation - with a good base-- (Overloading of trucks assuming 50 - 60 tonnes if bridge not designed possible--) CIVIL ENGG DESIGN --- CORRUPTION --
