Am not going to move out: 'Ousted' Kerala Catholic nun Sr Lucy Kalapurakkal

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 14 (IANS): A Catholic nun who was dismissed from her congregation said on Monday that she was not heard by the Vatican and she will not move out from the convent where she is presently staying in Wayanad, Kerala.

It was in August 2019, the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) after getting the clearance from the Vatican dismissed Sr Lucy Kalapurakkal from the church at Manathavady in Kerala for disobeying church authorities.

Sr Kalapurakkal had last year supported the nuns' strike in the state demanding the arrest of rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who headed the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar.

Sr Lucy Kalapurakkal

But even though she was asked to move out from the convent then, she got an order from a court that she should not be forced out and has been staying there since then.

Speaking to the media on Monday she said it was two days back that she received a letter from her higher ups that her appeal to the Vatican was dismissed.

"How is it possible when the letter that I was given was dated May 27, 2020. I was not even heard by the Vatican, which is a denial of natural justice. I have been asked to move out from the Convent where I am staying in a week's time. I am not going to move out," said Sr Kalapurakkal.

Trouble started for her, when a nun had filed an FIR accusing Mulakkal of having raped her at Kerala's Kuravilangad church between 2014 and 2016. Mulakkal was arrested in September following the protest and is currently out on bail.

However, Sr Kalapurakkal became a target of the Church authorities after she joined the nuns protest against the delay in Mulakkal's arrest despite the FIR against him.

Since then she had been receiving notices from the church on flimsy charges such as airing her opinion about the bishop on TV channels, owning a car and writing a book.

Incidentally, the Kerala High Court, in December 2019 declined to ban the nun's autobiography titled "Karthavinte Namethil (In the name of Christ)" and later it was released.

Dear Naresh, The first point which I mentioned applies not only to the victims of rape but also to insubordination to the authority. It is a common knowledge those who break the official secret acts o, spread discontent or instigate insubordination in some government departments are treated harshly, whereas Sr. Lucy has only been asked to leave. She is guilty of breaking the oath of obedience to the authority and tried spread discontent. Did she take prior permission from the authority to go on strike? Did she take prior permission before writing the book ? She could have left the convent and lived luxuriously with the proceeds of her book and carried on her battle for justice for the nun. Why did she not do it ? .Was she under the influence of some outsiders who wanted her to discredit the catholic church? Was she aware of the rape in the beginning itself but did not protest about it or she came to know about it later? Does this not point out to opportunism? Kindly note that Proverbs 31:8-9 also demands that we act justly, not only victim but also to the accused. The length of the alleged rape period suggests that it could be a consensual act which went sour? What is clear is that both the Bishop and the nun are guilty of sexual immorality and deserve to be defrocked and taken out of circulation but there is no need to expel from the church. God’s justice demands that every human being no matter how cruel must be given every opportunity to repent and seek salvation.

All this for raping ( bringing bad name to) the church. Socialist / communist infiltration in the church, seminaries, clergy can not be ruled out or ignored to bring down 2000 year old Church. In the name of modernisation they have brought all sorts of worldly allurments into the church particularly in western churches, slowly trying to dismantle it bringing bad name to it. So to control not only church but also the world. Already managed to close churches and other worship places with their lab made viruses so to do much more evil unrestrictingly and for total control of the world. It Is written in the Bible Rev 12.4 Dragon's ( Communist chinese) tail swept 1/3 of stars (clergy) out of sky and flung them to the earth.

Dear Mr. John..... Focus on the issue.... We are talking about rapes in the convent and as usual you have only one thing to talk that is hatred against communism which is utterly balderdash..... During Indira Gandhi's period, RSS used to be blamed for every wrong doing in the country..... BJP came to power and now Nehru is the villain..... and for Mr. John communists takes that role..... it is your freedom to uphold your belief systems..... However don't be blinded to such an extent that you tacitly justifying raping of a nun...... Reminds me of the statement made by French footballer Zidane after he was shown the red card in the World cup for reacting to the provocations from the opposition team..... He said that it is very sad to see that "One who provokes is treated as a Saint and one who reacts is made a Satan..... This is exactly what is happening in this case.

    1) When a owner of the house rapes a servant is she entitled to permanent residence in the house? 2) Is she not obliged to follow the rules of the convent when she stays there? 3) Under the rules of the convent ,is she not obliged give all the proceeds of the book to the convent? 4)Shouldn’t she be charged rent for the stay at the same rate charged by Taj or Oberoi ?

Mr. John.... Convent is a congregation and not an individual dwelling to be owned by any individual..... The ecclesiastical hierarchy is only for orderly conduct of the convent and not for raping members of the congregation..... Pity upon your statement comparing the members of the convent as servants..... Also do you mean to say, once appointed as a servant, the owner is entitled to rape the servant but when the servant raises the voice, the rule book of congregation has to be referred..... Heights of double standards..... Also please be understood that Sr. Lucy was not raped, she only raised voice against a bishop who raped another nun in true spirit of Christianity..... What Bible says is “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”..... Ignore if you are not a believer or if you are a hypocrite.

Carlton S aldanha Shirva, your comment hears like the story of olden days.As teacher was explaining RAmayana, student was watching something else.As teacher asked him whether everything is gone in ,he simply replied saying ,No Sir ,still tail is outside..because he was watching a snake going inside .So others are talking about Nun should go out of convent or not,you simply answering about her wearing mask.Somehow many have mistaken this Nun as a rape victim. It is clearly said she only supported the Rape victim .Things here are simply making big round day by day.If this Nun (Lucy)had written letter to Vetican,I presume Vetican should write to her directly ,what in future she should remain in or not.Instead she gets answers indirectly ,to go out.Thats not the logic enough.A big Pity that Bishop as guilty is not at all punished enough ,but the sufferers are at present ,the Nuns, supporters.Convent is pressurizing ,to go out.If that gives them peace?or what wrong done inside will be wiped off?Pity the Nuns .Hope for a peaceful end.Bishop must be thrown out of religion ,church and peace come back.
