Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 14: Monsoon which had weakened over the last some days, picked up momentum in coastal Karnataka. On Sunday June 13, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts witnessed torrential rainfall.
All the taluks in Dakshina Kannada and also the city received heavy rain. Sea waves have become fierce and the meteorological department, which has issued an orange alert from June 14 to 17, has warned fishermen to stay off the sea.
Low-lying areas sin the city experienced artificial floods while a house in Badaga Yedapadavu village belonging to Leela Jinnappa Poojary suffered damages. A number of other houses in Iruyvail, Bappanadu and Karnad also suffered losses and power connection was disrupted to various places.
Madhava Acharya (55), who was cutting down the branches of a tree that had fallen on his house at Ulepady Purusharakatte in Aika gram panchayat, Kinnigoli, was electrocuted as he came in contact with live wire. The tree along with electric pole had fallen on his house and he was trying to remove them when his end came all of a sudden. Another person who was assisting Acharya had a providential escape.
A hillock near Uddangala Daivasthana in Arlapadavu in Panaje, Puttur taluk, suffered a landslide on Sunday evening and a huge mound of mud got deposited on the road. Traffic on the road has been banned.
Good rainfall resulting in fallen trees and traffic disruption were reported from Udupi district. Some houses in Karkala were damaged. Mescom has estimated the loss due to rain on Sunday at Rs 36 lac.
