Mangaluru, Jun 12: The second wave of coronavirus infection has proved yet again that the pandemic, at least as far as the state is concerned, does not result in deaths of small children. In Dakshina Kannada alone, over 7,000 people aged less than 20 were infected and no one in this age group has lost his or her life.
From March 1 to June 5, a total of 45,030 persons were infected in Dakshina Kannada district. Out of them, 16,440 belonged to the age group of less than 30. Even though such a large number of young people were infected, only one person died, which means, the death rate for under 30 age group because of this disease is 0.006%. Out of 7,232 persons aged up to 20, who usually are students, no one has lost life. This is to be noted. As at June 5, 1,318 persons aged less than 20 are being treated in the district, while 2,663 in the age group of between 20 and 30 years are being treated, sources said.

In Dakshina Kannada district, the death rate was very less even in the first wave. In the first wave, out of 702 persons who died till November 19, 2020, only two aged between 5 and 20 had died. In the second wave, out of the total death count of 205 till June 5, not a single is from the age group of less than 20, which normally forms of students.
Dr Ashok, Covid19 district nodal officer, said that children and young people normally are not too much affected by corona. Usually, this age group has better immunity against diseases and also as they do not come in contact with others during the period of infection, they recover well, he added.
