Mumbai, Jun 11: A four-storied residential building collapsed on Abdul Hameed road, Malad west on Wednesday night due to torrential rain during the last several days. Eleven people lost their lives in the tragic mishap. 15 people were rescued. Seven suffered critical injuries. They were admitted to the nearby BDBA hospital.

The fire brigade and the defense department personnel rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. The dead bodies that were stuck under the debris were retrieved with help from the police and the people. The injured were identified and carried to the municipal general hospital. Search for the people under the debris was in progress.

The house belonged to Mohammed Rafik, who lost nine members of his family. He had gone to fetch milk at night when the incident occurred. It is said that all the family members except his son perished.

Mumbai north MP Gopal C Shetty and Maharashtra minister Aslam Shaikh visited the spot, conducted an inspection and condoled the families of the deceased. The MP was accompanied by Maharashtra government opposition leader Pravin Darekar, BJP district president Ganesh Khankar and others.

Minister Aslam Shaikh said that the state government announced a compensation of Rs five lac each to the families of the deceased and the government will bear the treatment cost of the injured.

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri in a tweet stated that the loss of lives in the building collapse in Mumbai was unfortunate and shocking. He said in his condolences that suitable measures should be taken up to prevent such mishaps in the future.
