Karwar: Man digs 32-feet deep well all alone to fight village's water woes

Daijiworld Media Network – Karwar (MS)

Karwar, Jun 9: For the people of Manjuguni village of Ankola, Mahadeva Naika turned out to be a ‘Bhagirath’ as he dug a well along and resolved the drinking water issue of the villagers.

Mahadeva Mankalu Naika is a resident of Manjuguni village of Ankola taluk. The villager where he resides runs out of drinking water during summer.

There is only one well in the gram panchayat limits for 60 houses. But it gets dried during summer months.

Though there are wells in some homes of the village, water is not available properly. In addition, as the sea is just nearby, the water of the wells turns out salty during summer months. Seeing the plight of the villagers Naika started digging well on his land. In the last lock down he had in fact dug well to a depth of 28 feet but did not get water. During the second lock down he continued the work and dug another four feet and got water at a depth of 32 feet.

Naika, who works as a daily wage labourer cannot afford to get a well dug by hiring workers as he cannot afford the expenses. That is why he utilized the lock down time and dug a well. Now his household as well as the whole village uses drinking water from this well.

The villagers have lauded the effort of Naika and are happy that at last their drinking water scarcity during the summer months is resolved.

His work should be fully compensated under MGNREGS @Rs 1000 per day or at least Rs 500 per day. He should get a few lakhs as compensation including interest on arrears.

The man has done an amazing job. It is all the more pleasing to note that there was no accidental mudslide, as at times happens when wells are dug. The people of the village (of future generations too) must remain grateful to his sense of service.

@ KvKamath, Mangalore If at all, Naika charges a nominal fee that would not be considered as a revenue or commercial purpose sale. If our government charges the citizens for water consumption, Is that not against religious norms . If bill is not settled in time the corporation would swift action to disconnect the supply with due warning. Kya bhaiya ? Any advise to the authorities ?

It's a great effort by Naika for which he deserves appreciation and financial reward by those who make use of the well for drinking water. In the mean time, why couldn't the villagers lend helping hand to the lone worker. He must charge nominal fee on those who collect the water from the will. That would motivate him in the future.
