Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 8: The offices of the sub-registrars, which had stopped functioning a month back due to coronavirus-related lockdown, started to work again from Monday June 7. New registrations have been started. These offices had been closed from May 7 onwards.

Nine offices of the sub-registrar in Dakshina Kannada district and six in Udupi are now serving the people. Many people had obtained tokens for acquisition of property and their sale, by fixing their dates in advance. As the working of the offices were suspended all of a sudden, registrations were kept on hold. Now those who are holding tokens have to fix new dates and obtain tokens again.

Because of the closure of these offices, real estate sector was hard hit and the financial situation in the district had taken a beating. The real estate sector had demanded to permit these offices to be opened with 50 percent staff. These offices from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts used to bring a revenue of about Rs 1.5 crore to the exchequer per day. This department has been given a target of Rs 12,665 crore from the state as a whole in the budget for the current financial year.
