Mangaluru, Jun 4: The zilla panchayat (ZP) has instructed all the gram panchayats (GP) to provide yellow and black plastic bags for the disposal of biomedical and other wastes generated by the Covid-infected people undergoing home isolation.
Out of the Covid-infected people belonging to Dakshina Kannada district, over 80 per cent are in home isolation. Within the limits of every gram panchayats, there are several Covid-infected people. They have to mandatorily undergo ten days of home isolation and quarantine. The wastes they produce during this period have to be scientifically disposed of lest the disease might pass on to healthy people. Therefore such a system has been planned.

The civic workers appointed by the GPs who conduct door to door visits should collect both these bags every day, Before collection, the bags should be sprayed with 1 per cent sodium hypochlorite. Waste in the black bag can be disposed of just like any other waste. The waste in the yellow bag has to be pooled at specific spots earmarked at the primary health centres. From there the waste is taken away by the agency meant for medical waste disposal.
The civic workers carrying the waste should take enough precautions and precautionary measures like masks, gloves, head cap, face shields, PPE kits etc. The vehicles carrying waste should be sprayed with insecticide.
The black bag is meant for normal waste. Masks used by the family members of the infected, primary contacts and others should be cut and kept in paper bags for 72 hours before they can be disposed of with normal waste. The yellow bags are meant for storing masks, gloves, cotton, tissue paper and other medical waste of the infected persons.
