Udupi/Mangaluru, Jun 3: Because of increased demand for it in the district, eggs have seen a hike in prices. The egg is now being sold in retail shops at the rate of Rs 7 a piece. Egg dealers say that every day, about seven lac eggs come into the district from other districts.
Eggs have witnessed higher demand on account of lockdown and fishing holiday. People are increasingly consuming eggs because of their high protein content. The district gets eggs from Ballari, Bengaluru, Mysuru and Salem.
At the beginning of May this year, eggs were sold at Rs 480 for a hundred eggs. Society rate was Rs 430. The rate of the egg has since gone up to Rs 7.
The district has 105 poultry farms, as per information provided by Dr Harish Tamankar, deputy director of the animal husbandry department in the district. Four farms are exclusively for eggs where 87,150 chicken are being bred. Demand for eggs in the district has seen a threefold increase as compared to the past.
In Dakshina Kannada, eggs are sold at Rs 6 in wholesale and Rs 6.50 in retail shops. From May 1, egg prices are witnessing a steady increase. The retail price of egg which stood at Rs 5 as of May 1, has now gone up to Rs 6.50, the merchants said.
