Mangaluru: 11 bus stands to beautify clock tower, A B Shetty circle road

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 3: The 500-metre road between the Clock Tower and A B Shetty Circle is being transformed into a smart road. As part of this move, several works have been executed here. By building the bus stands like the ones which previously existed here, an effort to make it more beautiful is being made.

RTO bus stand is the most prominent bus stand in the city. Passengers going to the railway station, market, taluk panchayat, mini Vidhana Soudha, university college etc get down at this bus stand. In the past, separate bus stands had been built here for the buses moving on different routes. During the time smart road and footpath works were undertaken, these bus stands were removed. They are now being replaced.

From the government college to RTO office, a total of 11 bus stands will come up. As per an agreement entered with the advertisement agencies which earlier managed these bus stands, the firms will build and manage the new bus stands. They will also share a part of the income with the city corporation. The Smart City has designed the bus stands as it wants all the bus stands to look identical. The bus stands will have seating arrangement for the passengers apart from boards about which buses will stop there, and advertisements.

Gaps have been created on the footpath for the purpose of maintaining them green. The electric lighting presently provided is enough to cover the road till the divider. Henceforth, light poles will be built on both the sides, and bulb will be fitted at a height of nine metres. Bulbs will also be fitted at five metres height for lighting the footpaths, which will facilitate the people using the bus stands and also the others using the footpaths, the officials say.

Sir Most of the busstops in Mangalore are being occupied by destitutes who encroach major portion of the busstops. The haplesscommuter including women and seniors stand in the open even when it is raining. Such misuse of public spaces should be prevented by periodical checking by concerned officials. Other wise it will only become what is known as ಊಟಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲದ ಉಪ್ಪಿನಕಾಯಿ.Hope a suitable mechanism is put in place to ensure proper maintainance of existing and new bus stops.

I can't understand the meaning of bus stand . Because in Mangalore the buses which are going towards out side the city, every step they stop and pick the passengers but while coming back to Hampankatta and state bank, they stop only at designated stops. I think while going out where ever the drivers stops to pick passengers is one type of bus stand ,then while comming back only two bus stops. So these 11 bus shelters are for dropping passengers it seems.

the concerned MCC engineer and contractors will merry in building those bus stands and bill 25 lac each behind every bus stand when the actual cost might not exceed two lacs... Jai mangagala ooru..It will take another five years to complete like how the pumpwell project was pulled for 10 years.. public only good for religious and beef politics..no guts to question public officials...

Really cannot understand what works was going on at this strech of footpath from the police lines to A B Shetty circle road for at least three years. Selected buses route should halt here and few at State bank. But this footpath is not scientifically planned it is really broad. I won't be surprised if cars, two wheelers and autos would use this footpath as a parking place.

Still the last stop will be the State Bank where there is no bus stand and city buses have to halt on the road before commencing their next trip. So soon after completion of the new central market, the premises of the present fish and vegetable market must be allotted for city bus stand.

Hope this bus stops will give shelter to the passengers and not to the time passers. Please appoint some staff to keep a watch on these bus stops so that they will remain clean all the time. Defaulters should be imposed with heavy fine.
