Bengaluru: Dispute ends with Kerala bagging right over exclusive use of acronym ‘KSRTC’

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jun 3: The prolonged fight over Karnataka and Kerala state road transport corporations on the use of the acronym, KSRTC, has ended with Kerala's right of usage having been upheld.

Karnataka had doggedly fought for the use of KSRTC emblem to symbolise its corporation as people of Karnataka popularly known it by that name. Karnataka was also hopeful that it would win this battle. The trade mark registry has ruled that Kerala state corporation will have the exclusive right over KSRTC and emblem.

The registry has asked the Karnataka road corporation to allow Kerala corporation to use the word, KSRTC, on the basis of the Intellectual Property Rights Act. The states had locked horns on the issue in 2013 and the fight continued for eight years.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation managing director, Shivahyogi Kalsad, said that he has come to know of the judgement and that he is yet to get official notice and copy of the judgement. "Once the judgement is received, the same will be studied, legal experts would be consulted and we will move further as per their advice," he said.

KRT - Karnataka Road Transport should suffice ….instead of wasting time and money on legal battles one should focus on creating a name for itself rather than fighting to name itself.

Both the RTCs were operating fine--having a shared name. But Karnataka KSRTC in its hubris decided to register a trademark and send notice to Kerala KSRTC. Kerala won the dispute simply by being the first RTC to use it. Kerala now has the sole rights over "KSRTC" acronym and 'Anevandi' logo. Here is good article from 2015 explaining what happened.( https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/ksrtc-who-does-name-belong-kerala-or-karnataka-24166 ) Now it turns out Karnataka wouldn't just loose the rights to paint KSRTC on its buses. But also might have to yield the domain name 'ksrtc.in'. Karnataka has the (one of the) best RTC in India. But this dispute was totally unnecessary and a total loss.

Karnataka SRTC rendered an yeoman service in the state. I wonder why Karnataka SRTC authorities approached court for using similar abbreviation by similar authority (not private bus operators) in other state with different logo. Ultimate objective of both the corporations is same- provide good service with out any exploitation. Both corporation acted as strong counter balancing power against private bus operators in Karnataka and Kerala.

Brainy and cunning has wide difference.. Opportunistic people get to the top with or without education.. Karnataka has accomodated people irrespective of anything in all fields.. Mallus only raise other Mallus with or without capability.. education is not a parameter , quality of education is what matters.. one mallu gets in and then goes on planting other mallu in any field.. Kannadigas are fools that they don't understand this..

Ganesha I agree with you 100%.. But mallu's have one thing is common, all are Malyalees irrespective of religion, caste and creed and even at the place of worship like, temples, mosques, churches they use Malyalam. They are difficult to divide where as it is quite opposite with us. We are divided and our coastal people are full of ego. I have experienced the same in the Gulf.

@Harold.... Being United is one thing.. but been baised towards others is not acceptable.. I worked as a HR in Bangalore, not one day have I ever favoured anyone based on state, caste, language or anything else.. if a person is capable for a job then hire them.. but I have seen quite opposite with Mallus, this is highly unethical and also against company policies but it's funny that people ignore such practice..

Karnataka yet again proved that it become Somaliya. All elected (selected by AVM) 27 BJP MPS are simply brainless and uneducated at least take up this issue at Loksabha. Karnataka is now full of Corona outbursts in the entire Rural area. Govt. doesn't know what to do. They suppose to vaccinate all rural citizens, but till today nothing happened. Every week lockdown extended without any planning. 2nd PU exams and 10std exams are not conducted. CET exams suppose to begin. Students' future is full of uncertainty. The chief minister is almost 79-80 years of age. Anytime memory can be lost and about to collapse. Finally...I can say only these words....'HEY RAM.....KYA HAI KARNAM'

It is ok if Kerala wins the ownership on KSRTC emblem. But Karnataka SRTC is much better than Kerala SRTC. Karnataka SRTC has introduced many new routes even in interior areas especially in Dakshina Kannada dist. Even some areas of Kerala located at borders are served by Karnataka SRTC. It has introduced many interstate express/limited stop buses to other state's interior areas. For example, Mangaluru-Bandyodu-Dharmathadka, Mangaluru-Uppala-Bayaru, BC road-Mudipu-Kasaragod, Puthuru-Kanyana-Manjeshwara, Puthuru-Kanyana-Bayaru-Uppala etc. Evenif Bayaru, Dharmathadka, Manjeshwara, Uppala and Kasaragod are the part of Kerala, the Kerala SRTC is not conducting any services. So, Jai Karnataka-SRTC.

They may have won the war, but the battle is far far from over, our KSRTC has the best buses in economy & luxury segments and beat them hollow 8: 2 in any format! But let's see, K'Nataka RTC MD is posting a legal affidavit on the "rights". It's far from over, and we will win the battle! Jai Karnataka!!

If mallus are so brainy and cunning they should have won this case within a year and not long 8 years. One of the reasons is chronologically the acronym (KSRTC) of Kerala is older than that of Karnataka. Karnataka’s KSRTC came into existence after 1973 since earlier it was known as Mysore State.
