Mangaluru, Jun 2: Unscientific digging has been undertaken near Karnad Bypass for laying gas pipeline on national highway 66. The locals have complained that because of this unprofessional work, they are suffering various problems on account of artificial floods.
"Near the Karnad Bypass, several houses are located in a low lying area. The work of laying underground pipeline between the city and Udupi for supplying gas has been stopped midway. The pits dug by the side of the road for the purpose have been left unattended. The mounds of mud gathered into a heap by the roadside have created artificial floods and are posing a dangerous situation," the families lamented.
Complaints in this regard made to the contractors who are laying the pipeline and the town panchayat here have remained unattended. During the rainy season, the situation will repeat and artificial floods will expose people to great risks. Moreover, as the pits have been left as they are, people who might inadvertently step into them during the rainy season may injure themselves or even lose lives. The people have demanded that the contractor should close the pit without fail as soon as the work is attended.
A local, Rukmini Poojary, complained that her family members are unable to come out of the house as a pit has been dug right in front of her house. She said that the flood situation is grim. Mulky town panchayat member, Yogeesh Kotian said that the contractor has been informed and if he continues to neglect, strict action will be taken.
