Bengaluru, May 31: To achieve the objectives of Prime Minister's clarion call on 'Atma Nirbhar Bharath,' the thrust must be given to 'skill-based, innovation-based education' and productive internships should be mandatorily achieved thorough academia and industry linkages, Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, deputy chief minister and state’s higher education minister said on Monday.

He was speaking in the inaugural address ‘Industry-Academia International Conclave-2021,' held virtually on the theme 'to enhance skill-based education and training in higher education organized by Sri Siddhartha Institute of Technology (SSIT), Tumakuru.

"Multi-disciplinarity is the core feature of the National Education Policy (NEP) and institutions must gear up to implement this. Any limitations in the institutions in terms of faculty and infrastructure should be addressed by achieving collaborations and linkages with other institutions and industry," Dr Narayan said.

The deputy chief minister said the country’s economy should be led by institutions rather than industries.

In order to ensure the availability of quality human resource to the industries, internship duration has been extended to a period of one year and all industry representing associations have come forward to cooperate in this regard. The need is felt to impart skill-based education in our engineering colleges, he said.

Some of the important challenges that prop up are:

What measures are needed in respect of other formal courses such as electrical, civil, mechanical etc.?

1) Is it time now to change all courses to be simply computer-based/ computer-aided ones?

2) What does the buzzword 'Industry Ready' stand for, especially when one doesn't want to stick to the core jobs?

3) How should the final years be motivated to study the core subjects, when they already have an IT job offer letter in hand?

4) Can some kind of liabilities be enforced by the concerned, for both academia and industries to realize successful Industry Institute Interaction?

Dr G Parameshwara, chancellor, SSAHE, Tumakuru, Dr Balashetty, vice-chancellor, Dr M S Raviprakasha, principal, SSIT, and others were present.

The NEP-2020 is the only thing I like about BJP. If implemented it will change the current infrastructure of education.

India produces second largest pool of science and engineering graduates, but majority of them are unemployable. Though industry- academia interface will try to address the problem to some extent, the basic problem in majority of the engineering colleges is unqualified teaching staff. The payment is so low in private colleges, that results into engaging staff that never gets job elsewhere. Government colleges the story is different because of job security and other issues. Unless we are able to attract better abled staff with better salary the situation is not going to improve. All this new education policy is hog wash if we don't address the issue of attracting the talent for imparting education in our institutes.
