Mangaluru: Small scale industries in dire straits due to lockdown

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 29: Small scale industries in the state are facing the brunt of one more lockdown. The state government, which has given permission for large scale industries to operate during lockdown, has ordered the closure of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). This has virtually pushed these industries to the brink of shutting down forever.

There are more than 15,000 MSMEs having one lac employees. At present only food processing units and packaging units related to that and pharmaceutical companies are allowed to function. These constitute just 20% of the total industries. Most of the industrial units have stopped production for a month. The goods that were manufactured before the announcement of lockdown are lying in the godown causing loss of crore of rupees. If the government does not come to the aid of these industries nearly 50,000 employees will lose their livelihood.

Some of the important products for the large scale industries are supplied by small scale industries. For instance, nuts and bolts for machines produced by large scale industries are manufactured by small scale industries. Now these are supplied by small scale industries of outstation states as the small scale industries of the state are closed. If this continues, the small-scale industries of Karnataka will surely face closure. In addition industrial oxygen is also not available. They are sent to medical use.

The government should make changes in lockdown guidelines and allow all industries to open immediately. Last year, the union government had brought an emergency loan scheme of Rs three lac crore for MSMEs. The eminent leaders of MSMEs demand schemes of the same type this time too.

The MSME owners are also demanding that the electricity connections of units which have not paid the electricity bills should not be disconnected and time should be given till July end at least. In addition, fixed charges in the electricity bills should be waived for the next three months. The association of MSMEs have also appealed to the state government through BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel to call a meeting of the office bearers of MSMEs and hold a meeting with the chief minister and industries minister and resolve the issues faced by the industries.

The backbone of MSMEs was already broken down after demo & GST, when the businesses were cut down by 30%; final nails on the coffins were hit by Corona! Since the administration is in so much of a financial mess, they are just doing some jugglery to buy time & pacify the common citizens! It's just a matter of time the economy will go into a tailspin! Just read, in the Deccan Herald, the macabre, conditions of so many poor people subsisting by living off bones of burnt human corpses & dead animals due to absence of food and money; we in the cities cannot believe such facts, but please do your own research and find out for yourself the situation at the ground level; very very sad indeed!

Oh don't worry people, PM Modi will enact a law by ordinance and claim the 2.8 Billion in Foreign Currency Reserve to distribute to you all. What if he didn't bring 15 Lakhs ? Look how smart our Ram/Lakshman Gujju big bellies are ! Any law can be written off, any new convenient one can be made by them.

MSMEs and the whole of Trading businesses are at the brink of collapse due to the apathy shown by the powers to be. Let's not forget that these businesses feed so many people too and contribute to the nation's prosperity. Demonetization, GST and influx of cheap substandard Chinese products had already ruined them, and now this pandemic has broken their back.

If the fixed electricity charges are waived for the MSME sector, those will be levied on the residence users to make up for the loss. Moreover if the fixed electricity charges are waived, where will the salaries and direct expenses be covered from? We are in the vicious cycle. Someone has to bite the bullet to save the economy. Who will it be? What plans/blue print does the government have for the SME/MSME's when the lockdown is lifted? Is Nirmala Sitaraman in India or Lakshwadeep?
