Mangaluru, May 29: The major service roads in the city used to get dotted with bad patches and potholes after the rainy season started and a few heavy rains were experienced. But this year these roads have already become wretched although the rainy season has not commenced. Vehicles find it hard to negotiate the service roads lining the Kulur and Kuntikan flyovers.
Every year, the service road next to Kulur flyover gets damaged at the onset of the monsoon. This time potholes have appeared long before the monsoon rains started. This service road has always been in the news from the day flyover construction started. If it rains heavily, the rain water gets accumulated and it becomes difficult to find whether the service road near the Reliance petrol bunk exists or not. The two wheelers struggle to avoid having to jump in and out of the highway potholes.
On the service road from Kottara Chowki towards the city near Kuntikan, a road leads to BMS Hotel, Bharath Auto Cars and Advaith Hyundai. On this road that leads to Lohit Nagar, the road was dug to fix drainage pipes after which the spot has been filled. The work of providing proper asphalting to the damaged road has not been undertaken properly. The crushed stones and concrete mix that had been laid on the road have become loose and popped out. The road is lined up with holes and big sized stones that have become loose due to vehicular movements.
This year, lockdown is in force from April last week and therefore vehicular movement has been very less. Now there are no buses. Still, the number of potholes on the Kulur service road have not reduced. People want this road to be set right and enable them to use it without problem.
The service roads laid during the construction of the national highway at Thokottu and Pumpwell too suffer because of poor workmanship. If the vehicle drivers are a little careless, they are sure to suffer grave injuries. There are service roads on two sections between Thokottu Ullal cross road to Naganakatte besides flyover. This is very narrow road where potholes have cropped up. The rainwater here has no space to flow out. Likewise, the drainage work in front of the old check post on the road between Thokottu Junction and Talapady has been partially completed.
Many such roads cry for immediate attention. The people hope that the authorities will do the needful before the rainy season begins.
