Mangaluru, May 27: Minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs, Umesh Katti organised a meeting, following the proposal to provide red parboiled rice under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
The meeting was held in the 'Sammelana' conference hall of Vidhana Soudha on Thursday, May 27.
There is an annual demand of 12 lac quintal of red parboiled rice in the district. In the meeting, it was decided to send a proposal to the union government, urging to approve to purchase of MO 4, Jaya, Abhilasha, Bhadra Kaje, and Jyoti paddy variety to meet the demand.
It requires 20 quintals of paddy, to meet the demand for red parboiled rice in both districts. In the meeting, it was also decided to procure paddy from Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Belagavi districts. After obtaining permission from the union government, measures will be taken to supply parboiled rice through PDS to the people from November by procuring rice through local rice mills, said the district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.
To meet the paddy shortage grown in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, measures will be taken to purchase from others districts said Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Corporation vice president, Kiran Kumar.
In the meeting, the food, civil service and consumer affairs officials were present in the meeting.
