Mangaluru: Scheme to pump effluents from Bajal to Kavoor not implemented

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 27: The plan to supply effluents from Bajal 20 MLD capacity sewage treatment plan within the city corporation limits to the Kavoor water purification unit has been a non-starter.

In the past, the city corporation had taken a decision to transport treated effluents to Mangalore special economic zone. Plan for laying a pipeline for the same had been envisaged. But the decision taken then has never been implemented.

The 20 MLD capacity effluents purification unit at Bajal started functioning from sometime back. After facing numerous challenges, the project became functional. The unit processes effluents pumped here and the water so processed is being released into drains. It had been planned to lay pipeline from the Bajal sewage treatment plant to Kavoor sewage treatment plant through a pipeline liwhich which was to pass through Padil junction, Kulshekhar church, Kalpane, Shaktinagar, Yeyyady, Maryhill junction, helipad and Mahalingeshwara temple.

The city corporation has set up 22 wet wells across the city. Water from toilets, water from washed utensils etc flow into manholes and then to the wet wells. From here the water reaches the four sewage treatment plants located at Surathkal, Jeppinamogaru, Kavoor and Pachanady. The water from Kavoor plant is now being used by MRPL.

Mayor Premananda Shetty said that the plan to supply treated water to SEZ could not be implemented as SEZ did not take further decision. He said that steps will be taken after discussing the issue of reusing the treated water from Bajal unit.

Putting up a sewage treatment plant is really an environmentally friendly initiative where a 20 mld plant can give about 15 mld of treated water that is as good as potable water. But the cost of the treated water will be high as compared to fresh water. Central government promotes such schemes with viability gap funding. Municipality should seek such funds, reduce the cost of treatment and offer that water at affordable price to SEZ. It will be then s win win situation for both Municipality and SEZ.
