Mangaluru, May 27: A section of contractual nurses and group D workers, who are appointed in the dedicated Covid care center at Wenlock hospital, are unhappy as their salary gets delayed every month.

It is said that these nurses and workers have been appointed on a contract basis to fight the Covid-19 situation.

Speaking to Daijiworld on condition of anonymity, a nurse from the hospital said, "Contractual nurses, who are appointed for the Covid-19 duty, have a high risk of getting infected. We put our own lives at risk, fight against the deadly pandemic and serve the patients. Unfortunately, we are not getting our salaries on time. It will be delayed by a month. As we have family and other commitments, it has become very difficult to lead our life. We are yet to receive the salary for the month of April."

Another nurse informed that during the first wave of Covid-19, the nurses who were treating the patients were provided three days off after they worked for three consecutive days. But, this time though, the nurses who are deputed in the dedicated Covid care center are given only a day’s off in a week,” she said.

A group D worker also informed that even they do not receive salaries on time.

Speaking over phone, district medical officer (DMO) Dr Sadashiv Shanbhag said, "The salary for the month of April will be credited soon. As there was a delay in the budget, it got delayed. The salary for March has been already credited.”

On weekly offs for the nurses, the DMO said, “During the first wave of Covid-19, there was such a system where nurses worked for three days and were provided offs for the next three days. But now, they are working on rotation basis and they will get an off once a week. Only one off per week has to be given even under the government guidelines. We are already paying risk allowance along with the salary. If the government releases any additional allowance, we will surely pay them.”

Last year the government promised covid allowance for all covid warriors. Til today even 1 rupee has not come. Salaries are delayed. If we ask for salary they yell at us. During lockdown we are expected to report to work. No transport is provided. Forget about food. Our owners ask us to vacate the house and nobody supports us. The ground reality

This is a bad new way. All govt works are subcontracted and these subcontractors pay poorly and have no legal liability if the employee is injured.

Central vista is more essential and urgent since the man who claimed as chaiwala and said he slept on hard floor, today wants to live in opulent, luxurious ivory towers and use private plane of 8600 crore rupees. What a criminal waste of tax payers' money. Till today, out of 35000 crores promised in the budget for vaccine, only a small and pittance amount is released. What a shameful thing to hear that the salary of front line warriors who serve the sick, putting their life in danger is not paid.

One of my relative wanted to join the COVID duty as a temporary doctor. But the government promises they will pay this and that and they don't do the same. See the fate of the Junior residents in government hospitals. Even after doing COVID duty, they are not paid for many months and also extending their service. Someone will say it is a national service. But at the cost of life ? without having proper treatment facilities and working hours ?

yes..its true....They put salary once in 3 months... i heard not only this year... last year also.. .those who depend on salary how to go during these days of difficult time....We show our gratitude to them by throwing flowers, and calling them as warriors......but practically govt. is doing injustice......they are taking risk and serving.......All the responsible persons are accountable before The Almighty God.... Govt.wants their service but not paying on time........Where are the various associations so called fighting for justice......see one of our private hospital ....by the 6th of every month salary is put.......Let the Govt. learn from them.....
