Mangaluru, May 27: In spite of being run by the government, Lady Goschen Hospital in the city has been providing the best facilities to the patients. The hospital deserves to be hailed for performing deliveries of 50 Covid-infected pregnant ladies in the month of May this year.
As compared to last year, covid19 second wave has more severely affected the pregnant women this time. In the previous months, the deliveries of infected ladies never crossed 45 in any of the months. But during the first 24 days of May 2021, the hospital performed 23 normal deliveries and 27 caesarean sections.
Lady Goschen Hospital had humbled its own records in October last by performing 800 deliveries in that month. On that occasion too, 14 normal and 21 caesarean sections had been performed in respect of infected ladies. Later, the figure went down, but of late, the hospital has been getting more and more pregnant ladies suffering from coronavirus infection.
Lady Goschen Hospital has a history of 173 years. In September last year, a separate Covid maternity block was opened with a total of 21 beds including 15 oxygen and five non-oxygen beds. A total of 53 beds have been earmarked for the ward now including 14 for suspected cases. General and caesarean beds have been segregated.
So far, a total of 331 infected pregnant ladies have been admitted into the hospital. Some of the suspected cases were later proved negative. Among the newborns, three babies were born with corona infection. The hospital has separate intensive care units for Covid positive newborns.
The hospital, unlike other hospitals, does not face shortage of oxygen. The hospital has obstetrics ventilators and ICU beds.
Getting pregnant is a process in which naturally women's natural immunity against diseases gets eroded. It is normal to get infected when immunity goes down. Therefore pregnant women have to consume nutritious food, and vitamin C tablets to make sure that they do not bleed excessively. Maintaining personal hygiene and taking care not to get infected are important aspects of pregnancy management.
