Beltangady: Pickup stranded in flash flood, locals undertake rescue operation

Beltangady, May 26: In a bizarre incident that occurred at Urpelgudde of Chibidre village of Charmady gram panchayat in the taluk, a pickup vehicle got stuck in the river as the water level rose suddenly on the evening of Tuesday May 25.

Pickup vehicle was returning through the river bed route after delivering materials for centering work to the house of M K Dayananda when flash floods struck. As the pickup vehicle reached the centre portion of the river, huge amount of water gushed into the river. the driver and co-passenger in the pickup quickly sensed the danger and came out of the pickup and reached the bank of the river. The pickup got stuck in the river. The driver called others for help on his mobile phone.

Local youths rushed to the spot and managed to tie a rope to the pickup and tie the other end to a tree on the bank of the river. The pickup overturned as the level of water rose, but did not get washed away as it was tied to the tree.

Members of SKSSF Vikaya team jumped into the river that was flowing to the brim and pulled the pickup from the water. The pickup was badly damaged.

The team of daring youths who brought the pickup vehicle up from the water to the bank included Siraz Chibidre, Nazeer B K, Iqbal Kona, Imran, Asif, Addu, Usman and others.
