Udupi: ‘Will seize vehicles used to dump garbage on roads’, warns DC Jagadeesha

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (JD)

Udupi, May 19: Deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha has warned public of seizing the vehicles used to throw garbage on national highways and other roads.

In a media release, the DC said, "It has come to my notice that many are dumping garbage on road sides. The vehicles which are used to throw garbage will be seized by the local administration. Such vehicles will be used to collect garbage until the end of Covid -19 pandemic.”

Even during the lockdown, the public here in certain parts of Udupi, were dumping garbage on national highway and other roads. Daijiworld.com in a report, a couple of years ago, had found that Nittur area on the national highway was the hotspot for garbage dumping. This was also followed in many gram panchayat limits as well.

Seize DC should seize the garbage and keep it in government offices for once instead of seizing vehicles. Establish a proper collection and disposal system, educate people and monitor performance. No one will throw garbage in public places if the system works.

What education is required to dispose waste? They are just telling public to not to dump it on the road side. You can seem waste wrapped in plastic bag and dumped near railway bridge on Katapadi to Shirva road. It was stopped in between but started again...

Finally someone has spoken. Everywhere people throw garbage here and there. There are so many beautiful remote places around udupi Manipal and i see people have designated areas where they throw garbage on the road. It is horrible that there are people who talk about swach Bharath but still throw garbage on the road. There are people who lecture about cleanliness and ethics but still theow garbage on the road. This lot of people doesnt include just the poor but also has the rich and educated. There are people who dont mind spending a fortune on silly things but dont want to give 100 rupees for garbage disposal. The DC has spoken. But i still would like him to go one step further and make it a criminal offense to throw garbage anywhere and everywhere. But he also must get a smooth and effective garbage collection process in place.

Sir first of all there is no proper system to collect garbage in rural areas. Earlier people use to sweep and make ash out of dry leaves. Plastic bags are the main problem. If you do not ban usage of bags, you cannot stop people from throwing garbage everywhere. You can stand everyday near roadside to monitor violators. Change should come from grass root. Panchayat should call for meeting and each member from family should attend and discuss the issues. If you do not know the problem of people you cannot solve thier problems.

Good..... Compulsion only will succeed where inspiration fails..... Earlier it was only Beedinagudde, now it is everywhere..... Karnataka's Solid Waste Management Policy seems to be only on paper...... Parallelly Government needs to implement an effective Waste Collection system on the lines of Kudumbashree in Kerala, a collective of more than 60 lakhs women aimed at Poverty Eradication and Women Empowerment..... They collect segregated waste (Bio / Plastic / Hazardous) from every household for a meagre Rs.100 and from business establishments for Rs.200 to Rs.500..... Today no household has to dump waste on the roads and also every member of Kudumbashree is earning a minimum of Rs.15,000/-..... This movement completed 23 years just two days back.

If that’s the case where are the garbage bins in each locality? In past year all the local neighbourhood common garbage bins are gone. This is highly inconvenient, you won’t find such an idiotic system in overseas countries either. Commendable if there was proper garbage collection but that’s hardly the case here.

The new DC seems like full of hot air. He talks much in front of media instead of enforcing/implementing law. Instead of IAS, he should have taken acting career. There is a whole law on Karnataka State Policy on Sanitation and Waste Management which says there should be door to door collection Or HDPE bins placement nearby for residents so that they can dispose of their garbage etc. None of this has been implemented till now. Further, tendering of waste collection can also be done for entrepreneurs/businessmen. But it is not lucrative enough because there is risk of being caught in loophole in agreement against work done and getting your payments pending from Municipality for many months. Don't get me started on water connection to rural areas target of govt. It's non existent in rural areas of this district. There is whole news article explaining it - https://www.deccanherald.com/state/top-karnataka-stories/karnataka-may-not-achieve-100-tap-water-connections-970358.html Just pathetic excuse of an IAS. Hope someone new and real passionate about public service takes his place.

Good aggressive decision, if at all it is enforced legally! However, there are quite a lot of Panchayats who do not have garbage collection and disposal service. Will the DC issue order to such Panchayats to provide the service immediately!
