Kundapur: Cyclone-affected people question relevance of minister Ashok's visit

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, May 19: Fishermen leaders and cyclone-affected locals have questioned the purpose of revenue minister R Ashok, to the areas battered by the sea erosion at Maravanthe. The locals, who have lost property worth lacs of rupees, are angry that the minister went away without speaking to them and lending an ear to their grievances. They want to know why the minister visited Maravanthe if he had no time for the affected people.

Fishermen leader Mohan Kharvi, explaining the misfortune that has befallen the fishermen community, said that the area around Maravanthe has suffered extensive damages and the people of the area have not been able to sleep at night for the last many days out of fear. He expressed dissatisfaction at the fact that the minister at least did not even say words of sympathy to the cyclone-affected people during his visit.

Minister Ashok during his visiton May 18

He said that hundreds of people living near Gangolli port are spending days surrounded by fear. He noted that a proper protective wall is yet to be built there and the road that has already collapsed is likely to collapse further.

Fishermen leaders Naga kharvi, Shankar Kharvi, Sanjeeva Kharvi, Vasu K Kharvi, Sathish Kharvi and Lokesh Kharvi were present.

While the cyclone was creating havoc along the Karnataka coast the home minister went on full alert and mobilised men ,materials and central forces in Gujatat so that the damage is kept to the minimum. Now the Prime Minister has taken upon himself to assess the damage and declare relief perhaps by visiting the state. Contrast this with the case of Karnataka. The local NDRF is not provided with a helicopter for emergency use. Their attempt to procure urgent helicopter service from Kochi and Goa failed during the cyclone. Who has to ensure that Mangalore is also equipped adequately? Mr. Ashok made a whirlwind tour of Udupi and Mangalore and quantified the loss to the exact decimals (68.19) and left for Bangalore leaving lot of promises behind. That may be the last we will see of him or his promise. What is good to Gujarat could have been delivered to Karnataka too as Mr. Modi and Mr. Shah are our Prime Minister and Home Minister also.

Sasihithlu beach - one of the most popularly known place. Govt had spent 6 crores for the sasihithlu munda beach development in the year 2016-2017, also conducted Karnataka Open Of Surfing twice, this all happened when congress was in power and had Abhaychandra as MLA. Now visit and check the beach situation in Sasihithlu end point, even current MLAs and MPs had visited many times since 2018, but none thought of protecting that beach till now, also some of the BJP goons in the village has vandalized all toilets, shops and stolen cameras during last lockdown, they just did that because it was built during Congress Govt, no cases were filed and no enquiries had happened for this till now because they rule the place now. On Cyclone day Umanath Kotian just visited the beach in the morning and posed for few cameras and slept at home. Even R Ashok just showed off for a minute at beach. This all happened only for the photo op. Now the minister talk about releasing the fund for the development of beaches? are you waiting for this cyclone to happen? why those funds are not released before?
