Kundapur, May 18: Due to the effort of around 200 to 250 youths belonging to the fishermen community, residents of Maravanthe beach near here, sea erosion was controlled during the onslaught of cyclone Tauktae as it was passing the taluk.

Cyclone Tauktae had already eroded around 150 to 200 meters of land area at Maravanthe outer port area on Friday and Saturday. There was possibility that the sea would expand further on Sunday, May 16. However, 200 to 250 fishermen youth got together on Sunday and laid one tonne weight of sand into the gunny bags with the help of JCB machine from 8 am to 11 am and prevented further erosion of land at Maravanthe beach area.

The gunny bags were kept from the house of Chandra Kharvi till the house of M S Kharvi a distance of around 250 meters. This prevented further sea erosion during the passing over of Cyclone Tauktae. Though it was raining heavily, the youths did not bother and worked unitedly and built the retaining wal within three hours. Public has appreciated the presence of mind and timely work by the youth of fishermen community.

Mohan Kharvi, president of Sri Rama fishermen Seva Samiti said, “Due to incessant rains the work of breaking the stones was stalled. Because of this the stones did not arrive at Maravanthe beach to erect a retainer wall. That is why the local youth got together and build the wall with the help of sand bags. This has prevented further damage due to sea erosion.”
