Udupi, May 17: Coastal development authority president, Mattar Rathnakar Hegde has congratulated the navy vessel, coast guard boat Varaha and staff for rescuing nine people from meeting a tragic end. He also commended BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, Angara S, all the MLAs and the elected representatives who acted quickly to save nine crew members on a boat that was stuck between a rock in the sea about 15 nautical miles away from Kaup lighthouse. “A tragedy is averted due to everyone's efforts,” he said.
“People in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada faced panic due to the Tauktae. Several people lost their houses and land. Some have been shifted to relief camps. I request chief minister B S Yediyurappa to provide suitable compensation to the affected people," Hegde said.
“People in two boats ventured into the water despite warnings. It is irresponsible and suitable investigations should be held into it,” he added.
