Mangaluru: Pipeline damaged during road work, drainage water supplied

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 17: On account of irresponsible road works conducted by the highways department on Sunday May 16, drain water flowed into about 250 houses in the city. This incident happened in Nanthoor area.

A six-inch drinking water pipeline is laid parallel to the national highway between Nanthoor and Pumpwell. Water is supplied from this pipe to areas like Prem Nagar, Bajjody, Tharethota, Adu Maroli, and a few houses in Pumpwell area. When the highway department workers were cleaning the drains, the pipe was damaged. The workers cut out a piece of the damaged pipeline and tossed it aside, without informing about the problem to the authorities concerned. Water from the severed portion of the pipeline started flowing on the road, and the rainwater which accumulated in the drain started to flow through the other portion of the pipeline along with slush for about 250 houses.

Mayor Premananda Shetty inspecting the spot

People who were worried about the supply of slushy water through the pipeline, contacted the corporator Keshava Maroli, who informed the mayor Premananda Shetty. The corporator found that the pipe had been broken and the severed pipe was thrown there. He informed the corporation officials. By then, the mayor reached the spot and instructed the corporation engineer to undertake repairs. The rainwater that had filled the pipeline was cleared and by evening, clean water started flowing through the pipeline.

Water didnt start coming in da evening on 16th. Under jalasiri yojane, there shld hav been water everyday eventhough the pipe line is laid by the highway, water comes just for 3 to 4 hours on alternate days. That too initially fine water comes for about two hours because of which overhead tank doesn't gets filled up....When people who have gardens, farms finish watering their coconut trees, water pressure sufficiently increases. But, within few minutes valves will be closed. This happens on the same route where premnagar, bajjodi areas are connected.

The report does not mention anything about the action taken against highway officials for this irresponsible attitude that has caused health issues to so many people dependent on that water for drinking purpose. Prosecute them. That is the only way to make them accountable for their misdeeds. Otherwise it will repeat.

I think nobody is monitoring or doing any supervisory work. Mostly all are unskilled workers from Badami, Bagalkot, areas are in Mangalore.. Those contracts are ask them to do this type of work, in that field they have zero knowledge. These are actually Agriculture fields workers, they came for bread and butter for living.

The responsible supervisors or site engineers don't check or supervise such works in CPWD or PWD or Smart city projects . They leave it on workers and this is what's happening in Mangalore. How do we expect a labourer to inform officials when they don't know anything about communication. Even in Smart City projects this is happening in Mangalore.
