Mangaluru, May 17: On account of irresponsible road works conducted by the highways department on Sunday May 16, drain water flowed into about 250 houses in the city. This incident happened in Nanthoor area.
A six-inch drinking water pipeline is laid parallel to the national highway between Nanthoor and Pumpwell. Water is supplied from this pipe to areas like Prem Nagar, Bajjody, Tharethota, Adu Maroli, and a few houses in Pumpwell area. When the highway department workers were cleaning the drains, the pipe was damaged. The workers cut out a piece of the damaged pipeline and tossed it aside, without informing about the problem to the authorities concerned. Water from the severed portion of the pipeline started flowing on the road, and the rainwater which accumulated in the drain started to flow through the other portion of the pipeline along with slush for about 250 houses.
Mayor Premananda Shetty inspecting the spot
People who were worried about the supply of slushy water through the pipeline, contacted the corporator Keshava Maroli, who informed the mayor Premananda Shetty. The corporator found that the pipe had been broken and the severed pipe was thrown there. He informed the corporation officials. By then, the mayor reached the spot and instructed the corporation engineer to undertake repairs. The rainwater that had filled the pipeline was cleared and by evening, clean water started flowing through the pipeline.
