Mangaluru, May 15: Generally, when one thinks of police, the attributes that come to mind are of ruthlessness and high-handedness. The way the police lathi-charged the public during the lockdown has further strengthened these views. In many parts of the state and country, the public avoid speaking to police fearing that they may slap a foul case or ask for money as a bribe.
Contrary to the general belief about policemen, a duo of the department is providing food to 150 people daily. The Good Samaritans, who are doing this noble work, donning the uniform are head constable Shivakumar Rao of Economic and Narcotic crime police station and Sunil Kumar, attached to Surathkal police station.
These policemen have been doing the job of quenching the hunger of the destitute on streets for the past 10 days. They provide food to beggars and shelterless people at places like Urwa Store, old bus stand, Kankanady and Pumpwell. Rice, vegetable and chicken curry is distributed to more than 150 people every day. In addition, the duo also provide drinking water and face masks.
As both the policemen are on duty, the work of distributing the food to the destitute is done by youths of Adi Maheshwari Cricketers of Mahakali Padpu in the city. Every day the duo is shelling out Rs 5,000 for this purpose. After knowing this noble work of the duo, many donors have come forward to donate money. The team intends to serve more people in coming days with the help of generous donors.
