Udupi, May 15: Inmates at Kajaraguthu district prison at Hiriadka near here held a hunger strike on Friday May 14 accusing the jail superintendent Srinivas Gowda of misusing the facilities given to the prisoners.
The prisoners got enraged as jail superintendent Gowda is reportedly not providing the facilities that are provided by the state government to the inmates of the prison. It is learnt that the prisoners fasted on Friday and urged the government to take suitable action on Gowda.
The prisoners allege that jail superintendent Gowda and one more personnel by the name Katari demand bribe from the inmates in order to provide them facilities. The inmates also urged lawyers and MLA to visit prison and verify their claim.
The prisoners say, “Low quality food is provided here to the inmates. According to law, fish or mutton should be provided to the prisoners at least once in a week. But we are provided with chicken legs. The ration that is meant for the prisoners is sent to the residence of jail superintendent. Srinivas Gowda demands bribe for each and every item. He is not providing the facilities meant for prisoners.”
It is said that all the prisoners have accused jail superintendent Srinivas Gowda and have written a letter in this regard to Udupi magistrate. It is learnt that the prisoners concluded their fast after the district magistrate and Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon visited the prison and assured the inmates of looking into the issue.
