Udupi, May 13: Second wave of coronavirus had created panic all over the country. The life of transgenders, who are out from usual social fabric, is devastated because of the pandemic.
The way the society looks at people belonging to the third gender is entirely different. Most of the time they have to bear the brunt of teasing by the passers-by. Some of them beg for their living while others have strayed out from the straight path. Their life is a kind of painful living. Their life is completely destroyed because of second wave of coronavirus. There are very few people who come to the aid of transgenders. Social worker Vishu Shetty has lent his helping hand to these people during the most difficult time of lockdown.
Vishu Shetty has provided food kits to the transgenders. The number of transgenders in the district is quite huge. Most of them have come from other parts of the state as well as country. The state government had declared some facilities for them. District administration also had planned some programmes for their welfare. However, these were for just a few days. Now, transgenders have literally become destitute.
Lavanya, one of transgenders says, “We faced lots of difficulties due to lockdown. We could not even pay house rent and afford food. We appraised our situation with social worker Vishu Shetty and he arranged food kits for us, which has helped us a lot.”
Vishu Shetty says, “Transgenders are also part of our society. They should not be hungry because of lockdown. With this intention, I have provided grocery items worth Rs 10,000. Concerned officials should provide them basic facilities. Lockdown has brought various issues to these people. Public also should help them.”
In the first lockdown, all categories of people in the society faced many hardships. The transgenders, who are away from the main stream society are not given any helping hand by the society as well as the government. Their issues should be looked into as soon as possible.
