Karnataka 'temporarily suspends' vax drive for 18-44 age group

Bengaluru, May 13 (IANS): Owing to the short supply of Covid vaccines, Karnataka on Wednesday decided to 'temporarily suspend' vaccination drive for those aged between 18 to 44 years.

In a series of tweets, the Karnataka Health department said that the state government has decided that the vaccine procured directly by the state government for vaccination of persons between 18 to 44 years too will be utilised for vaccination of beneficiaries who are due for the second dose.

"Therefore, all vaccines available with the state government i.e. supplied by union government and procured directly by state will be utilized for vaccination of beneficiaries due for second dose," the Karnataka health department tweet explained.

The Health department added that vaccination drives for the 18 to 44 age group including those who have already booked appointments will be temporarily suspended from May 14 till further orders.

According to the health department, the state government on May 7 had decided to utilise the complete supply of vaccines provided by the union government for vaccination of persons above 45 years, for vaccinating beneficiaries who were due for second dose.

"But under the changed circumstances and severe shortage of vaccine, the vaccine procured directly by the state government for vaccination of persons between 18 to 44 years too will be utilised for vaccination of beneficiaries who are due for second dose," a senior health department official told reporters on the condition of anonymity.

The health department added that this order will be applicable for Covid vaccination at all state-run Covid vaccination centres in the state.

As of now, only two vaccines manufactured by Pune based Serum Institute of India (SII) and Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech are allowed in India for mass inoculation programme, but these companies are struggling to meet the country's overwhelming demand for vaccines amid the ferocious second wave that has seen India's Covid burden go up manifold.

Karnataka symbolically launched anti-Covid vaccination drive on May 1 but ever since it has failed to take off due to short supply of vaccines. Karnataka Health minister, K. Sudhkar was first to state on April 30 that it was better to put off the launch of the drive on May 1 as the state had not received required stock and this was even endorsed by Chief Minister, B.S. Yediyurappa on that day. But, Yediyurappa the next day launched the vaccination drive symbolically on May 1.

It is not a rocket science. There is no vaccine stock available in India. My daughter has been waiting for this vaccine from 1st May. Interesting part is - the sites for 18-44 opens with the Notation "Fully Booked"? How. Is it internally sold, arranged etc? There was no way to get access to any hospital - paid or free. It's a Gimmick.

Maharashtra Government is trying to buy Vaccines from international Market and planning to do vaccination for everyone as soon as possible to control COVID-19. Government of Karnataka can do the same. It will be too late and disaster if we wait for help from Central Government. Save life of Karnataka , We elected you to provide good governance and to provide good infrastructure. If you delay karantaka is going to have disaster.

Karnataka government has given 1 Crore dose order to SII & 1 Crore dose order to Bharat Biotech. Also, 2 Crore vaccine dose - Global tender will be floated. But, not sure - when everyone will have access to vaccines.

This idea of global tender for vaccines is not going to work. Central government is forcing states to compete with countries all over the world. Even if a vaccine company agrees, given the current demand it might even take up to a year for the vaccines to be delivered. Instead central government themselves should've floated the global tender using PMScams money or the 35000 crore allocated for vaccination by nirmala in the budget. Now where that money goes nobody will know.

It is the height of mis- governance and incompetence. Vaccine production within the country was known to the government and it was in the common knowledge that it is grossly inadequate to meet the countries requirement. It was surprising when government announced the schemes for vaccination and left one wondering as to what is up the sleeve of government in meeting the required shots. As expected it is utter chaos making people to run from pillar to post to get their second dose.

Those who had Covid infection would have developed robust antibodies in a natural way, even better than any vaccine.( except immunocompromised patients). This can be determined by antibody testing. They need not be given priority for vaccination, actually they may not need it at all. There are 2 vaccines one by Bharat Biotech and one by Zydus Cadila which can be adminisred as NASAL SPRAY, these should be fast tracked. This way those who require the vaccine can be covered faster.

You are correct but If it is not given to everyone how global elites can make money and give commission to many in medical fraternity and health ministry to promote it? Looks like on mutants no effect at all with this hurriedly tested and brought out vaccines but with boosters after boosters some more money and for business continuity? Finally looks like all common people are made guinea pigs, are these survive future stronger communist evil viruses is the question?

Fooling people is their way of life and governance. If vaccines are not available and you do not know their availability then what is the hurry in declaring on May 1st. What is symbolic vaccination launch when vaccines are not available...????

Sameer, Cremation ground not available you say. But, now people have found, there are enough places in Ganga, Yamuna, and rivers in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa, May be, according to present thinking, just bathing in Ganga, does not forgive the sins, but to attain moksha, one has to go thru the rivers downstream, In Madhya Pradesh, people who put the dead bodies in the river told that they believe, that placing the dead body in the river will give moksha to the dead.

Good decision from the government. Those who took initiative for the 1st dose must get priority for the second dose.

Govt is creating unwanted confusion among people. First make sure that enough vaccine is available and then start vaccination drive. Don't play with people of the state.
