Mangaluru, May 12: Even as the people and governments are engaged in a grim war against coronavirus pandemic, the west coast of the country is facing the prospect of being hit by the cyclone Tauktae. The cyclone is being created out of the fall in the atmospheric pressure in the northwest region of the Arabian Sea. It is likely to hit Maharashtra and Goa coast on May 16. This warning was issued by the meteorological department.
Because of the sudden fall in atmospheric pressure, heavy rains may lash the coastal belt of Karnataka too. A yellow alert has been issued as Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts are likely to get rainfall on May 12, 13, and 15. As the coast and the Malnad region are expected to get heavy rainfall on May 16, an orange alert has been issued.

The department said that north and south interior Karnataka may receive normal rainfall during this period. It has advised fishermen not to venture into the Arabian Sea for fishing because of the threat posed by the cyclone.
District and taluk level officials, nodal officers have been directed to compulsorily remain at their centres to manage the calamity. Fishermen should not get down to the sea. Children and people should stay away from electric poles.
