Mangaluru, May 10: The city police is cracking down on unauthorised movement of vehicles during the lockdown hours amidst surge in the number of COVID-19 positive cases.

Several vehicles were seized and the commissioner of police N Shashi Kumar himself was on the roads near Clock Tower on Monday May 10. The seized vehicles are parked at Nehru Maidan.

It may be recalled, as many as 233 vehicles were seized on Sunday May 9.

Speaking to the media, the police commissioner said, “The state government has imposed strict guidelines from May 10 to 25. Since morning, our department personnel are enforcing the guidelines. Due to the weekend curfew in the last two days, the crowd has increased today during the relaxation. Probably, the crowd will reduce from tomorrow. So far under Mangaluru city police commissionerate limits, 180 vehicles have been seized. We will continue to take action and will submit it to the court. I urge people not to come out of their houses unnecessarily. "

Police have tightened vehicle checks at various points in the city to curb the movement of people during the lockdown, from last week after the state government imposed lockdown. The government’s and district administration instructions to tighten the rules come after the state including Dakshina Kannada district recorded a high number of Covid-19 cases in the last few days.

Several vehicles are being seized, cases under NDMA and Epidemic Act are being lodged and fines are levied for not wearing masks. The police have confiscated 127 two-wheelers, 2 three-wheelers, 39 four-wheelers, a total of 178 vehicles. Further, seven NDMA cases, 15 cases under Epidemic Act, and 325 cases for mask violation were registered.

The district administration has issued new lockdown guidelines starting from May 10 morning where shops can be open only from 6 am to 9 am to buy essentials.

The need for covid appropriate behavior and precautions by the citizens is vital. However, the Politicians and Officials should apply some common sense while dealing with those using vehicles. For example banks open at 10 am and function up to 2 pm but you cannot use your vehicle to go to the bank after 10 am; Post Offices are open from 9 am to 12 noon but you cannot go to the Post Office after 9 am; You are allowed to go a hospital if you are unwell or for receiving your vaccine at any time but police have stopped and fined vehicle owners on this score. Senior citizens cannot be expected to walk to the nearest store and carry heavy bags. All one's requirement may also not be available in your neighbourhood store. The most effective Covid prevention is wearing of MASK. Let this be strictly adhered and people who do not wear masks fined heftily but please do not harass vehicle owners.

Why are people going out unless it is a real emergency? Can’t we eat anna/saru or gangee/upinkai for few days and survive. Our ancestors had survived with this basic food. It is just a matter of few weeks guys and hopefully we will be out of this 2nd wave. Please listen to authorities. Follow the example of other Asian countries where they controlled this epidemic.

A lot of violation is taking place in Surathkal. Vehicles enter from Bangla gudde and proceed towards the main road without the police catching them. It appears as though this area is exempted from lockdown. Please keep a police beat here and he will be able to apprehend at least one offender every minute. It is grossly unfair when one percent roams around freely while the remaining 99% of the people follow the rules. Worse still, these bike riders neither wear masks nor helmets. I am at a loss to know why they are being allowed scot free.

Daijiworld published yesterday that private vehicles are allowed between 6 am to 9 am. Also there was message from health minister that vaccine is available in Government hospitals and medical colleges from 10th May onwards. Based on this info i went for my second dose of vaccine which was already due. I didn't get the vaccine, however my vehicle was seized by the police 8.30 am. I tried to convince the police but they were not willing to listen. They made me and my wife wait for 4 hours before releasing the vehicle after paying the fine. There were so many others with wg

Sorry to hear what you went through, I had warned everybody from many months that there will be lockdown in May when the numbers were down in February, they asked me why, I replied because of farmers agitation it wasn't imposed from February itself, another reason is elections, once they are over they will impose it mainly for 2 reasons- first is marketing of vaccines isn't possible if numbers are down, secondly any govt. is forced to impose Emergency Measures by taking our freedom away when it projects it has failed to stop the rise in numbers due to our cause & once they enjoy Absolute Power to do anything without people protesting(right to protest is curbed) it will CREATE an Emergency to continue the same. The Farm Bills, Sale of Public Sector Utilities, Labor Law Amendment etc. were imposed without any protest by opposition or people. Winner here is locally Hamare Do, but they are controlled by Bill Gates as he is using them as proxies to usurp our farm lands &introduce GM food crops which are known to cause autoimmune diseases & Cancers, he has big share in cancer drug companies. Vaccines he supports for the same reasons too, he has invested in them as well as health care industries if caused by the jabs. As long as people fall for the narrative it is for your good, nothing can be done.

Seize vehicles and charge hefty fine when you confirm they are roaming around. Mangalore police are good..they dont physically harm anybody. They evaluate every case b4 taking action. Youngsters pls be at home. Help clean the house rather than becoming a news item. Relaxation of time to buy must required items ioto 12 noon is need of the hour because at present the shops pull the shutter at 830am to control the rush.

Why the youngsters come to their senses and behave in right way. Fighting corona virus is not only governments, Health organizations, Doctors and front line staff. Public should take full responsibility in following Covid guide lines and the health protocols. We have check the spread by breaking the chain or link and that is by isolating ourselves from unwanted non importance gathering and socialization. What would happen in coming days, no one is sure. We can hope and try our best.

If the lockdown does not slow or stop the corona spread then the government and authorities must take full responsibility and resign completely from politics. Shame on educated voters for bringing an incompetent government into power.

Good Job!! Atleast one police person should wear a glove, physical contact can risk lives. Some healthy guys have no symptoms and these can be Corona carriers.
