Mangaluru, May 9: Streets in the city wore a deserted look after 9 am on Sunday May 9, with the weekend lockdown in place. Only milk parlours, a few HOPCOM outlets besides healthcare facilities remained open.
Some vegetable vendors were seen selling their produces on the roadside and fish sellers were going around on two-wheelers looking for customers.
In a few places, people made a beeline to purchase milk, vegetables, and fish. While at some place people followed social distancing, at some others they did not. After 9 am, the streets emptied.
It may be recalled that the district administration on Friday decided to allow the purchase of essentials from six hours to three hours on weekdays and complete lockdown on weekends, allowing only milk shops and HOPCOM till 9 am. The administration also prohibited selling groceries, fish, meat, and other essentials during weekend lockdown beyond the permitted hours.
Police have erected barricades in several places of the city and police patrol vehicles swung into action to check unnecessary movements of people.
