Mangaluru, May 9: Streets in the city wore a deserted look after 9 am on Sunday May 9, with the weekend lockdown in place. Only milk parlours, a few HOPCOM outlets besides healthcare facilities remained open.

Some vegetable vendors were seen selling their produces on the roadside and fish sellers were going around on two-wheelers looking for customers.

In a few places, people made a beeline to purchase milk, vegetables, and fish. While at some place people followed social distancing, at some others they did not. After 9 am, the streets emptied.

It may be recalled that the district administration on Friday decided to allow the purchase of essentials from six hours to three hours on weekdays and complete lockdown on weekends, allowing only milk shops and HOPCOM till 9 am. The administration also prohibited selling groceries, fish, meat, and other essentials during weekend lockdown beyond the permitted hours.

Police have erected barricades in several places of the city and police patrol vehicles swung into action to check unnecessary movements of people.

Unnecessary panic, unnecessary stupidity. There is no need to crowd in markets and overstock as if food is running away.

People are still not clear about the lockdown rules, what is allowed and what is not. Weekends are supposed to be full curfew except milk and medical supplies. How come people are on the road buying fish and vegetables? Also as per rules you are supposed to walk to the nearest grocery and not allowed to your his vehicle from tomorrow. What about people who don’t have any grocery close to where they live???

1)As per lock down guidelines, citizens are to purchase from nearest shops going by walk alone. If nearest shops (grocery/medicine in particular) are out of stock , purchase from next nearest shops irrespective of locality/area, by walk, should be permitted. 2)In case of vehicles seized for violating lock down guidelines, citizens maybe fixed with responsibility for deterioration of vehicle condition, keeping in view practical limitations of Police Dept in care-taking of the vehicles because of pandemic conditions and ensure police pesonnel are not held responsible/harassed by public or higher authorities , for the negligent behaviour of citizens.

I seems difficult for me to understand is it not possible to even stock a weeks or 10 days of supplies at home? ..by the pictures seen i am sure and without any doubt the customers have fridges at home there are a choice of veggies which last for over a week in the fridge and some outside too, Grains and pulses which can be soaked and cooked and frozen meat and fish and even frozen milk sachets and powdered milk are the other options to stay at home .... I wonder why people want to move out and risk themselves ??? Here in the UAE most of us shop only once a week and our freezers are stocked with frozen items weeks old. Please sacrifice a little for the sake of your and others health.. Tea with powder milk for a week of two will not harm you .
